Mobile Java Verification Initiative due to launch fully in February 2004
Web:www.javaverified.com
The JavaVerified initiative founded by Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and Sun is now in the final stages of becoming a public program. Testing over the last weeks of 2003 and during January 2004 will prepare the site for generally accepting applications for verification in February 2004. The importance of this initiative should not be underestimated, by providing a single mechanism to ensure that mobile Java applications are both MIDP compliant and safe it has a huge potential to further accelerate the adoption of Java as the de facto language for mobile applications by providing user and operators a guaranteed quality standard. For developers obtaining the "Java Powered" logo should help them market their applications to multiple operators knowing that there will be minimal further compliance costs. Operator acceptance of the initiative is critical, and initial reaction from Operators likeOL2 has been positive. SymbianOne would expect to see a range of Operators embrace this program during 2004.JavaVerified update follows:
Dear Registrant,
Thank you for showing your interest in the Unified Testing Initiative (UTI). Over the past six months, after the announcement of the Unified Testing Initiative at the 2003 JavaOne(sm) Conference, Member Companies have been working to bring into practice the first result of the initiative the JavaVerified program for certification of J2ME(tm) technology-based applications.
The JavaVerified.com website provides Developers with the most direct way to have their applications tested, certified and brought to market. Choice is available: the Developer can choose which provider will perform the testing and can choose which Member Companies catalogs the certified applications can be placed into for subsequent marketing and promotion.
Progress to Date:
We have finalized the test criteria covering all types of J2ME technology MIDP 1.0 and MIDP 2.0 applications, including a subset of tests required to test applications due to changes in firmware.
We have authorized test houses to undertake testing on behalf of the program. These test houses span the globe to cover different regions, languages and price structure.
We have authorized a vendor to digitally sign applications that have successfully passed testing as performed by one of the authorized test houses so that distributors of applications can be assured that applications have not been changed since they were tested.
We are in the final stages of preparing a program document and Trademark licensing agreement describing the the use of Java Powered logo(tm). Additionally, a white paper will be made available that outlines processes, points of contact, types of testing, localization, and sales channels available for your applications.
We are in the final stages of updating the JavaVerified web site with more information including:
- UTI Members programs
- Trademark licensing agreement documents
- Updated Testing criteria
- Details about the Authorized Testing Providers Test submission area
At the JavaVerified website, a test submission area will be made available which accepts MIDP applications, tests and certifies them and finally makes them available to Member catalogs for marketing. The submission area leads to a workflow that consists of a sequence of steps through which applications must pass successfully. The steps, from a Developers point of view, are:
- Choose one of the Authorized Testing Providers.
- Login or register to gain access to the testing workflow.
- Submit your application for testing.
- Upon submission, the application is automatically passed through a series of automatic tests that determine JAR/JAD alignment, API usage, etc.
- If the application does not pass the automatic tests, a report is generated which can be viewed by the developer. The developer will be required to make corrections and resubmit the application as required.
- If the application passes the automatic tests, the Testing Provider that was chosen is notified that the application is ready to be manually tested.
- The Testing Provider will contact you. Once, a business relationship is established, the Testing Provider will begin to apply tests, according to the UTI's Testing Criteria. Note that each Testing Provider sets the costs of testing and retesting an application.
- If your application does not pass some of the tests then you should make the necessary corrections and resubmit it. Note that the automatic testing is performed again because the application will have changed.
- Once your application passes the tests applied by your Testing Provider, a Digital Certificate will be issued. The application will be signed using this certificate so as to ensure its integrity (no one can change it intentionally or unintentionally) and to prove that your application has passed testing.
- Choose which catalogs to which you want your application sent.
Activities for the Next 70 Days:
- During the next 2-4 weeks we will work with a small number of developers to have their applications tested on handsets from Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson. Based on this trial run we will revise and tune the program process as required.
- In the early part of January, 2004 we will broaden our cooperation with a larger number of developers to run a minimum of 100 applications through the JavaVerfied program, keeping our eyes and ears open to further fine tune our processes and documentation.
- Continue to gain support from operators and distributors as the channels for distribution for your applications.
- In February, 2004 we will go LIVE!
In closing, we appreciate your patience and support for our Initiative and program. We hope you now have an understanding about this program and that you will continuously make use of resources, tools, and support that are available to you through this program as you embark upon development and deployment of your new and exciting J2ME based applications. Please check www.javaverified.com regularly. We value your feedback, and please send us your comments, questions, and new ideas how we can help you to monetize your efforts on J2ME Technology based applications to adminstrator@javaverified.com.
