A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSOR

The GSMA Mobile World Congress (formerly 3GSM World Congress) is the largest, most significant and most successful global mobile event in the world. The Mobile World Congress features the very latest in technology, services, and developments, bringing to life the promise of mobile broadband for all and defining the industry's path to continued growth. The Congress brings together the eminent leaders and personalities from mobile operators and equipment vendors, as well as those from the Internet and the world of entertainment.

WELCOME...
WMC Awaits...

While Glenn convalesces after his medical emergency, Richard is currently somewhere over the Atlantic on his way to the WMC in Barcelona.

This is the first time SymbianOne has attended what is considered to be the premier mobile show of the year. We expect to bring you a daily show report as well as the key announcements as they are made. In addition Richard will be posting images from the show to the onSymbian photo gallery and hopefully video via qik.com.

So what will the big news items be? In some respect shows like the WMC can be a little disappointing when it comes to big news. This is however understandable. Everyone wants the best coverage for their news and releasing at the same time as a million other companies is not necessarily the way to go.

One way to prevent drowning is to offer a little teaser. For example, Motorola who has released a video on YouTube titled "It doesn't need to be this hard." This particular metaphor has already been done to death - remember to now famous wheelbarrow at an earlier Symbian Smartphone Show - but in a crowded event every little helps.

Less obtuse is new we have heard of an announcement from Orange, Nokia, and ACCESS. At a press conference on Monday Yves Maitre, VP Devices, Orange; Jyrki Rosenberg, Director Series 60 Operator Account, Nokia; and Didier Diaz, SVP Product Strategy Management, Access will be announcing a new developer program from Orange designed to build a standardized process across all platforms (Windows, S60, Linux, and eventually Java) to industrialize the application development process, cut costs and deliver economies of scale. This announcement could start putting Nokia's purchase of Troll tech into a proper perspective.

More on this and the rest of the WMC hoopla next week.

Finally, if you are attending the event and have something SymbianOne readers should really know about or just want to say hi, drop Richard a note at richard@symbianone.com
