WELCOME...
Welcome once again to our bi-weekly Symbian news roundup... albeit slightly delayed! We have a good reason for the delay though as we've been compiling loads of news and content from the Nokia World event which recently took place in Amsterdam... SymbianOne was represented at the event by it's founder, Glenn Letham (aka. yours truly!) The event was bustling, particularly since there were more than 3,000 in attendance (a far cry from the 40 attendees at the first event). Nokia used the event to provide updates on the company's direction, give some insights into new partnerships and business streams (like the recent Navteq Acquisition), and provide attendees with a look at the latest (and coming) devices and services - like Ovi and the much anticipated N-Gage gaming platform which is scheduled to launch this week.

Perhaps the biggest news out of Nokia World was the announcement of Nokia's Come With Music, a partnership with Universal Music Studios that enables people to buy a Nokia device with a year of unlimited access to millions of tracks from a range of great artists. Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Multimedia, Nokia noted at the event, "Even if you listened to music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you would still only scratch the surface of the music that we're making available. Comes with Music fulfils our dream to give consumers all the music they want, wherever they want it, while rewarding the artists who create it." Details, particularly the sales channel for the service is yet to be announced... it also seems that there may be some DRM issues to be sorted out as well.

Comes With Music will no doubt be one piece of the Ovi puzzle, Nokia's doorway to mobile services. Ovi has already kicked off as a gateway to Nokia Maps and perhaps any minute now, Nokia and Ovi will open their doors to the much anticipated gaming platform, N-Gage... according to some Nokia blogs the N-Gage service will launch as a pre-release to owners of the N81, owners of other supported devices (like the N95) will have to wait a little longer for N-Gage.

Finally, the SymbianOne team would like to wish a warm and safe Happy Holidays to all of our readers, supporters, and most important, our advertisers. Note: a small gift of Free Holiday themes is provided here to any of you N95 users...enoy!

PS: Have you been to the new and improved Forum Nokia Developer Community website lately??

A Greener Nokia in 2008 - Green packaging, sustainable practices, and the environmentally sound 3110 - Nokia is a Global leader in their market, no questioning that. So, perhaps their move to make "greener" more environmentally sound decisions in their business processes will spread to others... indeed they are a good role model for action. Read on for a look at the "green" Nokia 3110 evolve, eco-sound packaging, corporate policies and more on the eco-friendly Nokia... we've even got a couple of eco-friendly tips for developers!

Lightning Notes From Nokia World 2007: Nokia in 2008 - Share More, Experience More - Marc Selby, Nokia VP Multimedia, provided the introduction and acted as MC for Nokia World which took place in Amsterdam the week of December 4. He greeted attendees with a friendly reminder that the first Nokia World event had some 40 attendees and noted... "Today there are more than 3000 registered attendees in Amsterdam taking in Nokia World 2007" - the theme, Share More, Experience More. Read on for lightning notes as we explore Nokia's vision for the complete digital life.

Continued from above...

Also of interest out of Nokia World this year was the awards to the winners of the Open C Challenge (See our report here). Several developers were recognized for their efforts and their fantastic apps... all the coders ported their applications from the Linux environment to S60 via Open C... the resulting apps were spectacular, to say the least, particularly when you consider that all the apps were ported completely in less than 3 months! The Open C Challenge Grand Prize Winner was Sittiphol Phanvilai (Bangkok, Thailand) for his MobiTubia application - a Flash Lite video player and YouTube portal application with real-time decoding for the S60 platform. I'd like to also give a special congrats to the developer of my favorite app of the bunch, MobiClass... developer, TongRen (Shanghai, China) received a cash prize of $3,000 for his MobiClass application. MobiClass is a virtual multi-media courseware application, developed by a team led by TongRen of Shanghai, China, a researcher in the E-Learning Lab at Shanghai Jiaotong University, porting 16,000 lines of code using Nokia's Open C Plug-In. Of note, TonGen tells us he learned about the contest via SymbianOne.com! Congrats to all the winners!
