WELCOME...
Optimized or Full – Which is the best Web?

The latest offering from Sony Ericsson, the P1i, arrived in SymbianOne’s offices last week. As with all new devices, one of our first jobs was loading it up with the information we have come to rely on, such as news feeds in the built-in RSS reader.

Several of the feeds on our P990 were for specific search terms in Google news, such as (you guessed it) “Symbian”. Originally these had been created by loading news.google.com in the P990’s Opera browser, searching for news and then choosing the RSS feed option to add them to the P990’s RSS reader. We fully expected to be able to do exactly the same on the P1.

However, this no long seems possible. If you access Google news from the P1’s Opera browser you no longer get the “desktop” news page, but an “optimized” mobile version. In this version, when you search Google news, the resulting page is devoid of the RSS feed option.

So we checked out the P990’s browser and then the Web Browser for S60, on a couple of S60 devices. All produced the same result. Closer inspection showed that all the Google pages we tested redirect to m.google.com.

Now we are sure Google will see this as “optimizing” the experience for mobile users. However, both Opera and the Web Browser for S60 are designed to display the same web pages we see on our desktops. While it is understandable that some users would prefer a mobile version, with lighter content and lower data costs, many may want the full desktop functionality. (It is a little ironic that RSS feeds are probably the ultimate light weight, low data traffic solution.) Why can’t Google at least give us the choice? You have this option with the standard Google search page, by selecting the “Classic” option.

Both the Opera and Web Browser for S60 browsers make compromises in offering the “full” web on mobile devices. This means optimized pages would best serve the mobile user. The clear challenge for Web designers is finding the right compromise between ease of use and functionality, something Google News has not done - yet.
