Location Location... will your location turn out to be the key ingredient to the elusive killer app? It sure looks that way doesn't it? Just this week the Nokia N95 has finally found its place on the shelves in the USA. The Nokia N95 is expected to start shipping in September to a growing number of independent retailers in major markets including New York, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco, as well as the Nokia Flagship Stores in New York and Chicago. Will consumers be willing to offer up $700 for this device? Well, if the lessons learned from the iPhone are any indication we sure hope that some 1 million of these will be in use soon, however, with little marketing of the device to date, confusion over where and how one gets the device (online, Nokia store, T-Mobile or AT&T shop?) it might be some time before the North American user base tops 7 figures.
Speaking of location, our own Richard Bloor has just released a quicktake on the latest offering from Nokia Maps. Unfortunately all is not totally rosy at this time as Richard explains... "Maps may leave some S60 users a little lost". He notes, while the beta version of Maps loaded quite happily onto an N93, the final version appears not to be available for "generic" S60 3rd Edition devices. All is not gloomy though as Richard explains that in general Maps, even in the beta version, is an excellent application.
Even research giants are this week touching the topic of location. Case in Point, Research in Markets have released a report on GPS usage in China. According to the report, Nokia, Motorola, and smaller domestic companies, like Lenovo and Bird, have introduced or will introduce a series of GPS-enabled models this year. This all bodes well for developers that are harnessing the power of location in their apps. Are you chasing the LBS space and looking for a kick-start? You might think about this year's LBS Challenge - EMEA applications are now being accepted while the Americas Registration Opens September 14. Another opportunity to learn more about the power of location in your mobile apps is the deCarta devcon, slated for Nov 13-15 in beautiful San Francisco, CA. - a must consider for LBS application developers. Finally, one more tip for those interested in the LBS space is the first LBS Location 2.0 Summit (an invite only event) taking place Oct. 23 in San Fran (coinciding with CTIA Wireless). The event is being put on by SiRFecosystems and will feature speakers from SiRF, Verizon, Navteq, Orange, and Wayfinder. As always, for more on LBS (incl;uding a weekly LBS Alert newsletter) see LBSzone.com - have a great week!
