Sony Ericsson P1 - a new member of the UIQ3-based smartphone family, and already the whiz kid.
The new Sony Ericsson P1 is a Symbian OS v9.1, UIQ 3.0-based smartphone offers great opportunities for mobile developers – C++ as well as Java(TM) ME. Both Java ME CDC 1.0 and CLDC 1.1 environments are supported and the IDEs from Borland JBuilder 2006, NetBeans 4.1 + Mobility Pack and Eclipse 3.1 + Eclipse ME can be used for Java-based applications. Best of all! With a 3.2 Megapixel camera, QVGA touch screen, dual-function keypad, WiFi, VoIP support and secure push email, the Sony Ericsson P1 is a must have for the demanding mobile phone user. This make it the ultimate vehicle to take your mobile office and multimedia applications to the market.

It's been a busy couple of weeks given that we're in the middle of the summer "slow-down" / vacation period. Case in point, last week in North America Apple officially threw their hat into the mobile device arena with serious hopes of becoming a serious player. I'm hearing estimates of some 700,000 iPhone units being sold in the first couple of days... 95% of those being the 8GB unit - why anyone would opt to save $100 for the 4GB device is beyond me and looks like the consumer has responded wisely in that regard... perhaps the consumer is a little smarter than they are given credit! For those of us focused on the Symbian space, seeing a device come to market like this is really not as "mind blowing" as it is for many others, however, here in North America the consumer is truly captivated with the multi-media smartphone concept. Could this bode well for the Nokia N95 which recently started selling in North America... it can't hurt! Speaking of which, a popular item on SymbianOne recently is out little iPhone vs Nokia N95 article offering up a closer look at the devices and outlining some of the pros and cons of each... an interesting poll reveals that our readers clearly favor the N95 (perhaps we're a little biased!) Clearly the iPhone has people thinking about the concept of fixed mobile convergence... is this finally the "almost" all-in-one device (I know people at Nokia that still pack around their beloved iPod) and what about pricing models... clearly all the device makers must be drooling at the fact that so many are apparently willing to pay up $600 for an unsubsidized device. I have to wonder where the developer fits into the plan, particularly with no SDK shipping for the iPhone - I'm sure we'll be hearing more about that in the near future (Speaking of iPhone rumor has it that T-Mobile will soon be offering the device in Germany).
Speaking of developers, have you considered Launchpad, Forum Nokia's latest offering to the developer? Think mid-tier program enabling access by anyone to rapid application development for the S40 & S60 platform. Last week we saw the launch of this program as Nokia addressed an area that will no doubt send many new developers their way... definitely a great thing for Symbian device users craving more goodies to put on the deck. Finally, from the "hot off the press" section, our own Richard Bloor has taken a closer look at Scalado's CAPS imaging software and shares a details of his conversation with Mats Jacobson, CEO at Scalado.
We hope you're having a great summer (or winter, depending on your hemisphere). As usual feel free to share your views about any of the latest developments in the mobile space. Oh, one last thing... I recently published a review on a very slick mapping application called Schmap... perhaps someone out there can help make this already incredible application even better by developing a mobile client! See details here and tell em Glenn sent you!
Scalado: When Image Matters -
Imaging is a fundamental part of today's smartphones. This reality is behind the integration of Scalado's CAPS imaging software into Symbian OS. Richard Bloor spoke to Mats Jacobson, CEO at Scalado to find out more.
TC TrustCenter Switch Benefits Developers -
The switch to TC TrustCenter certificates, for identity verification in Symbian Signed, does more than save developers money. Richard Bloor found out more about the change from Bruce Carney, director, developer programmes and services at Symbian Ltd.
Apple iPhone VS Nokia N95 - you decide! -
iPhone or N95 which one would you want? Given North America's infuatuation with everything "Apple" and the mobile device users' passion for music it seems that the iPhone may win this battle, however, which device is really the best bang for the buck? Upon a closer look at the specs it really does seem like a simple question to answer although will it matter to the consumer? (We offer a poll also)

The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast
With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.
