Boo-Hoo For You = Boo-Hoo At S60.com?

Symbian's latest campaign to raise awareness of their phones in Japan seems to have provoked some odd reactions in an old place. The bloggers at S60.com have taken the campaign as something of a challenge and, somewhat strangely, started picking holes in the idea of convergence.

The S60.com posts have picked up on issues such as losing a phone (and the security issues created if it has the ability to unlock your front door or access your bank account) and battery life. The reaction is all the more mystifying considering several of the technologies are being explored by Nokia. Just look at the Nokia 6131 NFC. And isn't this where we all expect S60 to go?

Then Dameon Welch-Abernathy's latest post over at the S60 blogs extols the virtues of iPod as the ideal music device when compared to the Nokia N95. While he has a point, the promise of convergence is that the smartphone can work without a PC, while without a PC or Mac the iPod is nothing.

With many of the features see in Japanese phones using Symbian OS it's all a matter of risk versus reward. The day-to-day convenience of relying on one object to perform the task of many, compared to the inconvenience in the rare event of its loss. After all how often have you lost your wallet or keys?

If the downsides to convergence were significant, would the Japanese really be doing it? It is unlikely that Japanese enjoy getting locked out or having their bank accounts siphoned any more than anyone else. It is ultimately an issue of culture; the Japanese have an ability to embrace technology in a unique and wholehearted way unmatched in the West.

They must know this at S60.com. So perhaps the reaction is not so much about arguing against convergence as simply taking advantage of an opportunity to do some ad-hoc market research. Let's hope so.
