The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast
With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.

The One OS To Rule Them All
Symbian OS has always been touted as an open OS. "open" can mean different things to different people. There are those who would claim that only open source is truly “open”. Even the claim that Symbian OS is “open”, because its APIs are public - at least in the sense that any developer can make use of them - is somewhat arguable. After all, there are undocumented APIs and there is the whole argument about Symbian Signed.
However, it is undeniable that Symbian - while treading a careful line between the competing objectives and desires of developers, handset vendors, and operators - is trying to deliver on the “open” promise.
The last few weeks has seen that openness start to stretch out beyond the core constituency of Symbian C++ and Java developers with the release of P.I.P.S and its extension from Nokia, Open C. While these technologies still present the non-Symbian C++ developer with the challenge of the S60 or UIQ UIs, they offers developers - particularly Linux developers - a far easier way to get their software onto Symbian phones.
At the same time there are third-party initiatives, such as .NET Compact Framework for S60 (the subject of a recent SymbianOne interview that could make Symbian OS attractive to developers with Microsoft language skills.
While arguments about what truly constitutes “open” will rage on, it is clear that Windows Mobile will largely be the domain of Microsoft developers and Linux that of Linux developers, but Symbian OS is rapidly becoming the domain for any developer.
