Hello again from SymbianOne as we return from a buys 3 days in Orlando, Florida taking in CTIA Wireless and the Navteq LBS Challenge. Much of the "big" Symbian related news etc... had already been released at 3GSM a few weeks ago, however, Symbian indeed was very present at CTIA. Most notabley, the Symbian team was present to discuss the latest development with the World's leading mobile OS, in particular, the features available in version 9.5. SymbianOne was lucky enough to have an exclusive first-look at the newest release prior to the official launch (See Richard Bloor's article & Symbian 9.5 Q&A with Symbian) - this timely feature served well as the first Q&A on the latest update. Forum.Nokia was at CTIA (as usual) and used the event to promote their BIG news... you know, the release of the Open C plug-in for S60 SDK. We met briefly with Ravi Belwal, Sr. Technology expert with Forum Nokia. I asked Belwar, So, what does the plug-in mean? He offerd up the following... as an example, Oracle has used Open C to port the popular Berkeley database from Linux to S60 with no programming! The total build took about 100 hours and the team did not need to know about the Symbian build process. Nokia was also proudly showing off the N95 (and the very cool Nokia Mustang) and it got TONS of recognition from the LBS space and pretty much anyone discussing LBS... indeed here in North America its nice to see a GSM device shipping with integrated GPS... the 5 megapixel camera is also a nice bonus... can't wait to get my hands on this one! Forum Nokia was also promoting the available LBS APIs and GPS-enabled devices at the Navteq LBSChallenge which took place at CTIA (see article below) - Nokia was once again a Global sponsor of the event - testament of the company's commitment to LBS - I tell you, LBS is coming on! Not to be left out, Sony Ericsson was also very visible on the CTIA exhibiton hall floor. "Developer World" members were promoting the newly released Carbide.c++ plug-in that allows developers to configure their UIQ 3 development environment without leaving the IDE. Additionally, the company used the event to launch 2 cool new Wlakman devices... and believe me, the W580i is nothing short of cool! Get this... integrated pedometer, headset with earhooks, slider action, 1 GB external memory, Quad band... and much more... very nice! Finally,

The 2007 Navteq LBS challenge... Putting Location-Based services On The Map - At CTIA Wireless 2007 in Orlando, Florida there was no doubt that LBS was hot… plain and simple. Perhaps it’s not the killer app [yet]; however, it is one hot topic at the show with LBS on the tongues of many and LBS at the center of many discussions. To reinforce just how hot LBS is, Navteq once again took center stage announcing the winners of this year’s LBS Challenge. SymbianOne's Glenn Letham was at CTIA and took in the LBS Challenge.
