Hello again from SymbianOne as some of us gear up for CTIA. Not much pre-conference hype coming our way, other than the usual bombardment of emails from pretty much every one of the 3500 exhibitors! Symbian once again has a fairly visible presence at the event and I'm also told that we can expect Symbian to have some exciting news during the week so stay tuned for more on that one! For many, the week will kick off with the annual Smartphone Summit. This year the keynote will be presented by Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford and Symbian EVP Marketing, Jorgen Behrens. Following that will be a day jam-packed with presentations touching on subjects like Mobile Web 2.0, Smartphone Enterprise Devices, Wireless Security, Smartphone Push E-mail, Social Networking, and more. CTIA kicks off with keynotes from 2 former Presidents - Busch (Sr) and Bill Clinton. After that the CTO Roundtable looks quite appealing to me, after all, when else can you get CTOs from leading mobile tech firms like Sun, Nokia, Ericsson, Nortel and others all in one room? Also at the same time is a Developers panel where industry leaders will look at topics that are typically troublesome to the developer... this one is also a must try to attend on my list. Finally, I'll also try to get the skinny on the annual Wireless Innovation Contest. Winners will be announced at CTIA and many of the developers should be in attendance.
On Wednesday the North American winner of the LBS Challenge will be announced with one lucky company getting their application thrust into the spotlight and almost assuring acceptance by the industry and hopefully securing a deal with a major carrier. Honestly, I don't understand why there aren't more than 1,000 entries in this fantastic event, however, given the success of the recent European Challenge and last year's challenge there will no doubt be atleast 300+ applications submitted to the judges... how would you like to judge that one?
Moving forward, Nokia has started shipping the highly anticipated N95 (sorry North America, not yet for you) with the big selling point being what else? mapping & integrated GPS (think Smart2Go / Nokia maps). The device also boasts a 5 Megapixel camera, integrated GPS, support for high-speed data transfer, and all the bells and whistles we've come to expect in a mobile multi-media computer... ok I'll stop there because I'm drooling over this one! Speaking of sweet devices, our own Richard Bloor has been really busy "getting down" with a Sony Ericsson W950. Our spotlight features will collectively serve as a "how to" for the W950 owner, covering every aspect of discovering, downloading, and managing your mobile music library - in my mind this trilogy should ship in the box with the device - hey, that's not a bad idea!
Sony Ericsson W950: Let Them Discover Music -
In this last look at the user features of the Sony Ericsson W950 Richard Bloor discovers some new tunes and explores the different ways users can listen to their music.
Sony Ericsson W950: Let Them Download Music -
While a functional player is good start for any music device, it needs quick and convenient methods to upload music. In this second article on the Sony Ericsson W950 Walkman phone Richard Bloor look the loading music from a PC and over the air.
Sony Ericsson W950: Let Them Have Music -
Sony Ericsson's W950 Walkman phone represents an important opportunity for UIQ developers. In a series of articles, Richard Bloor takes a look at the W950's Walkman player, ponders on mobile music, listens to the radio, identified some new music, and rounds up the W950's key developer resources.

The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast
With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.
