Has Nokia Lost Touch?... Touchscreen convergent devices seem to be all the rage. The iPhone has upped the anti, offering an interface that almost eliminates the hard button. For the moment we will let the fact pass, that UIQ has offered a largely buttonless UI for years now.

When Nokia launched the 7700 it was part of a plan to offer a touchscreen based platform, Series 90. However, this platform never saw the light of day. Nokia undoubtedly realized the folly of having three separate Symbian OS based platforms all with slightly different UI philosophies and APIs - not exactly the greatest turn-on for developers.

When Series 90 passed into smartphone history Nokia signaled that its features, which we took to mean the touch screen at least, would make its way into S60. In late 2005 the S60 3rd Edition: What Is New for Developers v1.1 paper indicated that this would happen in 2006. To date there is no indication that Nokia has a touchscreen version of S60 imminent.

Touchscreens are certainly not a UI nirvana. After all UIQ have spent a lot of time implementing a button based UI. On our Sony Ericsson P990, the time spent on the flip closed button-based interface balances well with the time spent tapping the screen.

Whether the iPhone is a success or not it will undoubtedly raise the expectation that a smartphone is a touchscreen phone. While Sony Ericsson will surely reap the rewards of their UIQ development, where will this put Nokia? In a large, diverse, and growing market the impact won't be short term, but S60 needs to find that magic touch soon.

The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast

With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.
