As usual 3GSM threw up a few surprises. Nokia's announcement of its new Eseries and Nseries devices were not one of those surprises; undoubtedly the worst kept secret of the shows announcements. The Nokia 6110 Navigator was the only device largely unheralded by Internet rumors. While its Eseries and Nseries cousins have created a greater buzz the 6110 shows an interesting dichotomy in the strategy of Nokia's various divisions. Nokia's Mobile Phones seems to be pursuing a more differentiated approach in its use of S60; its recent devices have focused on clear market segments, music, sports, and now navigation. NMP seems to be using a convergent platform to create devices that largely de-emphasize convergence, an indication of how embedded S60 is becoming with Nokia range.
While Nokia had problems keeping the lid on their new devices, Motorola has no such issues and the MOTORIZR Z8 came as something of a surprise, for several reasons. The most obvious reason for surprise being that Motorola seemed to have turned its back on Symbian and UIQ in favor of other solutions. The second surprise is that Motorola used the MOTORIZR Z8 to introduce a new design concept. A flash in the pan or a resurgence of UIQ in Motorola's line up, only time will tell.
On the UIQ front Sony Ericsson's call for additional investors in UIQ is certainly a potentially interesting twist in the platform story – creating something of a mini-me Symbian. Sony Ericsson's announcement said they were already in discussions with potential investors. Given the potential embarrassment of failing to get any takers from such an invitation, those talks may be at quite an advanced stage.
We spoke to Johan Sandberg this week, about this and other facets of UIQ's new status and expect to publish that interview next week. We think it will be an interesting read – so keep a look out for it.
Smart2Go - A First Look at Nokia's Free Mobile Maps and Directions -
This week Nokia finally lifted the lid off the free mapping application smart2go (aka. Nokia maps). So far more than 30,000 users have downloaded the free (Beta) application, including SymbianOne's Glenn Letham... check out Glenn's first look at smart2go running on a Nokia N80.

The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast
With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.
