The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast
With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.

The annual carnival which is 3GSM is almost upon us and the performers (sorry exhibitors) are already starting to posture (sorry, announce products).
Both Nokia and UIQ have already rolled out new versions of S60 and the UIQ platform respectively. Announcements of new platforms the week before a major show can only mean one thing, device announcements at the show.
Nokia's new Eseries devices are hardly a well kept secret. An upgrade to the E61 is expected as is the all new S60 based communicator. While many will mourn the passing of Series 80 the standardization on S60 was almost inevitable after Series 90 bit the dust. The rumors of the new communicator sound impressive, Monday should tell us if they were well founded.
Sony Ericsson is a safe bet for a UIQ 3.1 device announcement. However, could 3GSM be the place for some new UIQ licensees to show their hand. There has been an expectation that UIQ would rustle up a few more licensees for a while now and it would be an opportune time for UIQ to show its self as more than an on vendor pony.
While platforms and devices are good the news that two more operators are working to integrate Symbian OS (or in T-Mobile's case S60) into their portfolio is in many ways better.
Spain's Movistar seems to have taken things a step further, announcing it will standardize its smartphones around Symbian OS. While Movistar is a relatively small operator this move could herald similar ones from smaller operators globally.
Next week will undoubtedly be a hectic one, we will keep you abreast of loads of 3GSM news here at SymbianOne. For those of you heading to Barcelona for the week, have a great show and please feel free to send us your thoughts and comments from 3GSM.
