The market for UIQ 3 applications is growing fast

With the P990 smartphone, the M600 messaging device and the W950 Walkman(R), Sony Ericsson is opening up important new markets for mobile developers focusing on high end gaming and mobile productivity. The fact that most applications written for one phone will run on the other two, the dedicated developer support and the Sony Ericsson Application Shop are other reasons to develop for UIQ 3.

WELCOME...
The announcement of the Nokia N93i and N76 at CES has been somewhat overshadowed by the launch of Apple's much heralded iPhone. Views on the launch of the iPhone have varied from suggestions it will have a seismic affect on the mobile phone industry, to speculation it will be a flop, Newton style.

The iPod is certainly a design icon, however, as anyone with a large number of songs stored on one knows, being an icon does not necessarily mean usability is guaranteed. The iPhone is certainly trying build on the iPod's success and to do things a little differently; although it's not the first mobile phone to use the finger as the primary input mechanism - that honor may belong to Neonode.

Two things will govern the impact of the iPhone. The first is licensing. If Apple had licensed it's OS in the early days it would have been a serious challenger to Microsoft. Licensing an iPhone "platform" could create serious alternative to the current platform options. However, a licensing strategy seems unlikely.

The second issue is cost. While Steve Jobs believes the iPhone is 3 or more years ahead of the competition, there is a strong argument for it not being so. The smartphone market is no longer about $600 plus devices' it's about the midmarket.

Without third party device and devices positioned in the mid-market the iPhone will probably be a niche device, albeit (given the size of the mobile phone market) in a large niche. From it's niche the iPhone will help keep the traditional mobile phone vendors "on their toes", but overall is unlikely to have a significant impact on the mainstream smartphone market.

Do you have an opionion on the iPhone? Blast your thoughts to info at symbianone dot com - Oh, and a Happy & prosperous new year to all of our readers, sponsors, and their families.
