The Beatnik Audio Engine offers developers huge potential for delivering rich audio on Symbian OS devices. Beatnik usually work behind the scenes but the Symbian Expo provide the opportunity to talk with them directly about the Beatnik possibilities.
Beatnik’s audio technology is now licensed to the majority of handset vendors with implementation on a wide variety of phones, including all the non-Japanese market Symbian OS phones. Beatnik also addresses the wider mobile market with many phones using its technology in development including mass market phones utilizing mobileBAE which is included on TI’s GSM chipsets.
“The Symbian Expo is a great opportunity to meet our existing customers and talk with those companies with whom we have yet to formalize licensing,” says Jeremy Copp Beatnik, Inc.’s Chief Sales Officer. “The Symbian Expo also allows us to show our technology to those who may not have seen it lately or the few who have not seen it at all.”
While Beatnik usually works to license the Beatnik Audio Engine to handset vendors and then supports development of both audio content, such as ring tones, or rich audio content in applications so the Symbian Expo provides the opportunity for developers to talk directly with Beatnik.
“For Symbian OS developers there is really nothing else they need from us,” says Jeremy. “All the APIs and tools they need to take advantage of our audio technology are available from application tools vendors such as Metrowerks, our own web site and developer forums such as Forum Nokia. But we would welcome the opportunity to show any developer what the Beatnik technology can achieve if they would like to join us at the show.” Although support for audio content creation is being increasingly enabled by licensees, through tools such as Nokia’s Audio Suite, Beatnik have a number of their own audio creation tools which will also be on show on its stand.
In addition to its audio technology a strong focus for Beatnik has been the development of open audio format standards. Jeremy points to the recently adopted 3GPP standard Mobile XMF, which he describes as the “next step in rich mobile audio” and promised to deliver content including digital samples either as audio elements in their own right or as a way to add new instruments. The first wave of Symbian OS device using this technology are likely to be announced before the end of this year.
“Our message for the Symbian Expo is to everyone in the value chain,” says Jeremy. “Beatnik audio technology is ready to provide audio content developers, application developers and operators with huge opportunities for revenue and we hope to show them how they can realize these opportunities if they visit us at the show.”
Beatnik will be on the TI stand. Beatnik’s stand will also feature Fatal Force from Macrospace to showcase what can be achieved with BAE.
