A flurry of announcements have come out of Cannes this week from the annual 3GSM. Most noteworthy are news of Symbian OS 8.0, and the new 9500 Communicator from Nokia. Read on for our Quiktake of this week's announcements.

9500_2.gif" align=left border=1>Nokia launches new enterprise-class Communicator - The new Nokia 9500 Communicator is one of the first cellular devices on the market designed to meet the demands of corporate IT departments for customization, manageability and security. The tri-band device supporting E-GPRS (EDGE) and Wi-Fi 802.11b is expected to be available in volume during the fourth quarter of 2004. The price (unsubsidized) of the Nokia 9500 Communicator is expected to be around €800 in Europe.
Panasonic Launches Its Most Advanced GSM Handset - The X700 Smartphone - Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., introduces its flagship model for 2004 - the X700 smartphone. This compact digital camera phone, with video capability, comes in Panasonic's stylish clamshell design and supports the miniSDTM card. Nokia today announced the addition of Legend Holdings Limited (Lenovo), the leading IT corporation and mobile handset manufacturer in China, as a new licensee of the Series 60 Platform. Lenovo chose the Series 60 Platform because the open and industry interoperable platform best supports their innovations and differentiates their offering in the very competitive Chinese handset market. Nokia worked closely with Lenovo in developing the Series 60 Platform to meet their highly specific market needs and to ensure fast time-to-market. Lenovo will license Series 60 based on the new Series 60 Complete Design Model offered to mobile handset manufacturers. Supporting the development of attractive applications and differentiated operator services, Nokia today also launched the Forum Nokia PRO developer program. The Forum Nokia PRO developer program is a subscription-based service that delivers premium levels of technical, business development and marketing support for the development of wireless applications and services to advanced developer companies worldwide. The program provides more direct access to Nokia's developer support services and is the most resource-intensive developer offering from Nokia to date. Subscribing companies will receive a developer kit for each year of membership, including a Nokia device, a developer book, SDKs and other membership items related to creating applications on Nokia Developer Platforms.
"We expect this year to be one of the busiest ever for our industry in terms of new announcements,"says Jorma Ollila, Chairman and CEO of Nokia. "The Nokia 9500 Communicator announced today is a significant milestone in our enterprise mobility strategy. The new Nokia 9500 Communicator, together with other upcoming communicator models, will form a robust platform for businesses to mobilize their vital business processes and key employees."

Wipro Technologies, the global technology services division of Wipro Limited (NYSE:WIT) announced a Series 60 Competence Center agreement with Nokia today. Wipro will provide smart phone development and integration services for handset manufacturers that have the licensed Series 60 Platform. As a Series 60 Competence Centre provider, Wipro will offer software development, backed by its understanding of the requirements for end-to-end Series 60 Platform software and hardware integration. Symantec Corporation announced a collaboration with Nokia to develop a secure client for Nokia business devices, beginning with the Nokia 9500 Communicator platform. Symantec plans to offer integrated client solutions for Internet security including antivirus software, firewall technology, updating services and centralized over-the-air management for Nokia's mobile devices. Symantec's key security technologies will provide an added layer of critical defense to the Nokia devices, enabling customers to operate enterprise class mobile solutions with the security needed to protect against today's Internet security threats. Combination of Nokia's Communicator platform and IBM's mobile software offers increased functionality to users - Together, Nokia and IBM have developed the extremely comprehensive Java (TM) environment for the enterprise mobility including J2ME MIDP 2.0 and CDC Personal Profile 1.0 and several other mobile and wireless Java APIs. IBM WebSphere Micro Environment for the Symbian OS will provide a J2ME Personal Profile runtime environment in the new Nokia 9500 Communicator to enable middleware integration and the extension of enterprise services to the mobile space. Developers will be able to use a desktop Java Development Kit, which is compatible with the Java environment in the Nokia Communicator. This will enable them to extend their existing Java-based applications to the device by using the skills and resources they already have.
Connected Gaming Arrives on Series 60 Platform With Airplay 2.0 - While the feature-rich Airplay SDK offers developers the option of authoring their connected game for both Symbian OS and Java (J2ME), it has now been optimized for Series 60 smartphones. New features in Airplay 2.0 include true real-time multiplayer arcade gaming support, unique Push-To-Taunt(TM) in-game voice messaging, the patent pending Handcuff(TM) DRM, security and anti-hacking framework as well as support and optimization for a wide range of Series 60 and Java-based handsets. In 2003, Nokia licensed Airplay 1.0 from Ideaworks3D to power the launch catalogue of titles for the N-Gage(TM) Arena, the world's first globally available multiplayer wireless gaming service. Nokia, Motorola, Inc. and Teleca are demonstrating the wireless industry's first full-featured smartphone reference design for WCDMA technology by integrating the Series 60 Platform and Symbian OS with Motorola's i.300-20 Innovative Convergence(TM) platform. "The 3G reference design will enable Series 60 licensees to ease the development of future smartphones and fully concentrate on product and application differentiation. Time-to-market and an ability to differentiate will be crucial in the 3G market that will provide manufactures and operators with the extensive volume opportunity of the mobile industry," said Antti Vasara, Vice President of Technology Marketing and Sales, Technology Platforms, Nokia. By integrating Motorola's i.300 platform with the Series 60 Platform, mobile handset manufacturers will be able to bring full-featured smartphones quickly to market, which will help speed the generation of revenue for operators.
Landmat, a leading developer of mobile services and content, today announced mBlog(TM), an application that enables mobile device users to create and receive multimedia blogs through MMS. mBlog offers carriers an additional tool to generate greater average revenue per user (ARPU). MobiMate Releases WorldMate 2004 for Symbian - A new and improved version of WorldMate(TM), the best selling mobile travel companion service from MobiMate(TM) Ltd. was announced today. WorldMate 2004 for Symbian now includes new functionality, and will be available in most European languages. The new services include a travel packing-list, clothing size converters, dialling prefixes, and more. Orange France Announces GPS Navigation Services on Smartphones - Orange France's GPS navigation services will enable Orange subscribers to convert their smartphone into a mobile co-pilot by purchasing an Orange 'all-in-one' GPS kit. The kit will turn customer smartphones into an intuitive navigation device capable of providing spoken, traffic-aware, turn-by-turn navigation instructions in real time across the entire European region. The Orange GPS navigation kit comprises the client application and a Bluetooth(TM) GPS receiver module, a cigarette-lighter DC adaptor, and a car cradle, in addition to a 12-month full-service subscription. The 'all-in-one' kit will be available from a selection of Orange France's phone shops and directly from Orange France's website. The Orange 'all-in-one' navigation kit is easy-to-use, with no technical skills required. The software is stored in a memory card that can be installed in the handset in moments.
