Geocaches now hidden in more than 180 Countries
SEATTLE – Geocaching, the popular location-based hide and seek adventure, is on the verge of announcing its 2 millionth active geocache. The major milestone in this worldwide hobby with more than five million members is expected to occur sometime on Sunday, February 24, 2013. The Seattle-based activity launched in September of 2000 with just 75 geocaches listed on Geocaching.com. The one-millionth geocache was hidden by community members and listed on Geocaching.com in March of 2010. The Geocaching community doubled the previous decade of geocaching growth in just three years.
A new sharable infographic and video 2 Million Geocaches in 1 Minute reveal the trends, stats and the rarely told stories of the 12-year-old hobby, including that there have been nearly a quarter of a billion “Found it” logs since Geocaching began. And if someone transported around the world finding a geocache every second, it would now take more than 23 days to find all the geocaches hidden in world.
Each geocache is an on-demand adventure accessible through a Geocaching App, or Geocaching.com and a GPS device. A geocache is a cleverly hidden container often holding small trinkets for trade and a logbook. Community members hide geocaches, list details on Geocaching.com and challenge others to find them. More than 400 new geocaches typically go live on Geocaching.com on any given day.
When the 2 millionth geocache milestone is reached, the name and location of the 2 millionth geocache will be made public. As a ‘thank you’ the geocaching community will potentially receive more than two dozen digital surprises for their profile. They’ll also discover a special way to thank those who hide and maintain geocaches.
