Tech Expert Weighs in on New Audio Products and the Death of the CD

Your iTunes library just got a whole lot better. Tech experts are predicting an audio evolution for the new year, meaning better music delivery at lower prices. New products and software are making music more attainable and high-end sound more affordable.

Tech expert Karl Volkman of Chicago’s SRV Network, Inc., predicts that the way we listen to music will evolve dramatically in 2013.

“With the advent of ever-improving technology, we are seeing online music platforms expand and professional-level audio products now being offered to the mainstream. There’s no question this will make old school products like CDs a thing of the past,” says Volkman.

It’s never been easier to get the music you want. Music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora make it easy to listen to your favorite artists, genres, and specific tracks. Audio software like iTunes and Audirvana make it easy to download, organize, and play audio files. With increased access to online music, the death of the CD is imminent.

Not only is music accessibility changing, but the quality of audio is improving. Digital-to-analog converters have been providing high-end sound for years, but with the introduction of AudioQuest’s affordably priced Dragonfly ($249), it is now available for mainstream consumers. The Dragonfly looks just like a USB drive, but connects to your computer to transform your digital music into analog for an amplified and richer sound.

The popular holiday gift Beats by Dr. Dre headphones promise studio quality sound at a $199 and up price tag. Tivoli Audio introduced PAL BT, a wireless radio that plays audio from any Bluetooth enabled device from its high quality speakers for $299.99 (in addition to playing old-fashioned radio stations and auxiliary plug-in devices). These products give the average customer a sound quality normally reserved for high-end, high-priced products.
