Student Developer Earns 15X More Than Best job Offer by Creating Mobile Apps in his Free Time Print E-mail
Written by Vserv.mobi
Monday, 20 August 2012

Like many young Indians, VenkatRamanan Ramasubramanian [http://blog.vserv.mobi/developer-of-the-week-venkatramanan-ramasubramanian ] from Trichy, Tamil Nadu, aspired to become an Engineer. He recently graduated, earning his B.Tech degree in Computer Science from Sastra University, Thanjavur. While many of us want to have some time off during our vacation, he wanted to help the society in some way.

During his 6th semester vacation, while the people of India were protesting against corruption and were rallying behind the Jan Lokpal Bill, he came up with the idea of building a platform for all the people who supported the bill. This platform would be a one-stop-shop for people to find news, discussions and events about the Lokpal bill, whenever and wherever they wanted. He also understood that the best place for such a platform would be the mobile and thus started building his fist App: Lokpal Messenger [http://java.handster.com/lokpal_messenger.html ] during his vacation last year.

Following the huge success of his first App, he and his friend Arun Balaji then decided to make more Apps under the guidance of their friend Ram Kashyap, who is the head "Student Nokia" developer at their college. Some of the other Apps also gained a lot of traction. Their Music Mixer [http://store.ovi.com/content/297637?clickSource=search&pos=1 ] App has more than a million downloads, Student Companion [http://store.ovi.com/content/294161?clickSource=search&pos=1 ] has more than half-a-million downloads, while Notes Locker [http://store.ovi.com/content/280234?clickSource=search&pos=1 ] and Magic cards [http://store.ovi.com/content/263915?clickSource=search&pos=1 ] both have more than 300,000 downloads each.

Ram Kashyap constantly provided moral support during this period and also suggested they try out Vserv.Mobi [http://vserv.mobi/index.html ] to monetize their Apps to make some pocket money. Today, Venkat earns much more than pocket money from his Apps - which he chose to monetize with the Vserv.mobi AppWrapper(TM). While he didn't disclose how much he earns, Venkat said, "I'm very happy given that I'm earning 15 times more than the best job offer I received on campus."

Commenting on the trend, Dippak Khurana, Co-Founder & CEO, Vserv.mobi said, "Earlier engineers were excited with career opportunity in IT services, now the next wave is product. Mobile is offering a global opportunity to build products, and Mobile Apps is the category to focus on for engineers in India. We are going to soon see many names from India in the App millionaire club."

When asked about his experience with Vserv.mobi, Venkat states: "Vserv makes monetizing much more simpler than other Ad-Networks. Another thing I love is the support they provide, it's the best I have personally experienced." He also mentioned that he strongly believes ads must not interfere with the App when the user is consuming it, which made it an easy choice for him to use the AppWrapper(TM) [http://blog.vserv.mobi/seeing-is-believing ] to place launch and exit Ads.

Binay Tiwari, Head of Global Marketing, Vserv.mobi commented, "We thank Venkat for partnering with Vserv.mobi [http://vserv.mobi/index.html ] in his journey of making amazing Apps that benefit the society. Student developers like him have an unprecedented opportunity to earn money by creating apps that millions of people around the world can benefit from."

Just like his friend Ram Kashyap who inspired him, Venkat hopes others would be inspired to help the society. When asked what advice he would give students aspiring to become developers, he states, "First think of how your App will be useful to society at large, the rest including fame and money will follow."

A true Geek at heart - he can't live without his laptop, mobile and netbeans!
