Mobile Voice Conference 2011 announced - Speech as part of the mobile user experience Print E-mail
Written by Mobile Voice Conference
Monday, 19 July 2010

San Jose, CA, July 15, 2010: The Applied Voice Input/Output Society (AVIOS) and Bill Meisel's TMA Associates announced that the next Mobile Voice Conference, which received rave reviews from attendees in 2010, will be held January 24-26, 2011 at the San Jose Marriott in San Jose, California.

"It's becoming rapidly evident that speech recognition and other speech technologies are increasingly an important part of the user experience on mobile phones and other mobile devices," explained Bill Meisel, co-organizer of the conference and Editor of Speech Strategy News. "The speech technology, whether in the phone or the network, allows users to simply 'say what they want', either as a pure voice interaction or integrated with other modes of interaction. In contrast, navigation among an increasing number of applications and features on mobile phones with the Graphical User Interface alone is becoming increasingly difficult."

In a keynote at the last Mobile Voice Conference, Michael Cohen of Google emphasized the importance of speech technology in meeting a need for ubiquitous mobile access--"any time, any place, any usage scenario, as part of any type of activity." In another keynote, Jay Wilpon of AT&T indicated that AT&T was offering a free cloud-based speech recognition service that independent application developers could employ, broadening the number of vendors that could offer such services economically. Apple's recent acquisition of Siri, a company offering a voice-interactive "personal assistant," further exemplifies the wide support for this trend.

"The conference examines practical applications of speech recognition, text-to-speech, audio search, speaker authentication, and other speech technologies, as well as proper practices to make those technologies fully effective," noted Bill Scholz, AVIOS president. "Our emphasis as a non-profit industry organization continues to be on the ability of speech technology as it exists today to delight users and solve critical problems with the user interface. The Mobile Voice Conference will highlight the availability of impressive applications and the strong capabilities of today's speech technology."

The Mobile Voice Conference is the place to discover what companies are doing in this area; how applications and services are evolving; sources of technology, tools, platforms, and advice; what speech technology can and can't do; best practices; and more. In addition to informed content, the Mobile Voice Conference is known for fostering networking and partnerships.
