Recall it was back back in June, 2004 when Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced the Java Verified[tm] Program -  a program to provide a unified process for the testing and certification of Java[tm] applications for mobile handsets (actually, Sun rolled out the program officially back in 2002)

So what does this mean to developers and publishers? Firstly, as of June Orange and T-Mobile Europe now require all new mobile Java applications distributed over their wireless networks to be successfully tested under the Java Verified Program.

To participate in the Java Verified Program, mobile Java developers can register at www.javaverified.com, and select among the participating global testing providers to test their applications. Also available at www.javaverified.com are detailed explanations of the testing process, testing criteria, pricing and access to member companiesÆ marketing and distribution programs. Wireless network operators, device manufacturers, application publishers and others interested in joining the Java Verified Program and advancing the program's goals should email the Java Verified Program Office at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Some of the Benefits include:

  • J2ME applications certified against unified testing criteria
  • Enhanced application marketing to worldwide distribution channels
  • Quality mobile Java applications for Network operators and end users

Program Requirements

  • All developer applications must be successfully tested using the Java AVK for the Enterprise testing process and criteria before a company can consider applying to join the Java Verification Program and to obtain the Java Verified trademark and logo license.
  • Only companies who have successfullycompleted all program requirements will be eligible to participate in the Program, gain access to the Program benefits, and have the right to reference the Java Verified trademarkand logo for their tested enterprise application.

Developers will be required to do the following:

  • Successfully test their application using the Java AVK for the Enterprise
  • Sign the Sun Trademark License for the Java Verified trademark and logo
  • Pay the Annual Licensing Fee per tested application4. Complete and submit the Java Verification Program Checklist
