Appointment Strengthens Foundation and Drives Innovation on Symbian in Japan

TOKYO & LONDON-- Fujitsu Limited (TOKYO:6702) and the Symbian Foundation today announced Fujitsu's appointment to the Symbian Foundation board of directors. Fujitsu joins wireless carriers AT&T, Vodafone, NTT DOCOMO, silicon providers ST Microelectronics NV and Texas Instruments, and handset manufacturers Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia as an Appointing OEM Member on the Symbian Foundation board.

Fujitsu has accepted all rights and obligations of a foundation Appointing OEM Board Member that includes supporting the foundation with both a financial commitment and active participation on the four foundation Councils that govern the development of the Symbian Platform. Fujitsu brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the open source community and many technological firsts on Symbian.

Japan is one of the most advanced mobile markets in the world. Symbian is the platform behind the FOMA MOAP(S) phones on the DOCOMO wireless network in Japan. Fujitsu contributed to the development of MOAP(S), and to date, more than 40 million Symbian-based phones have shipped in the Japanese market. Working with the Symbian Foundation, Fujitsu will address future market requirements and platform advancements that enrich the Symbian mobile user experience.

"We believe Fujitsu will continue to bring a wealth of experience in making consumer focused multimedia handsets with new user experience to the Symbian Foundation drawing on the successes of the innovative firsts Fujitsu has offered on Symbian," said Lee Williams, Executive Director, Symbian Foundation.

"Fujitsu is pleased to join and contribute to the Symbian Foundation as a Board member. With 8 years' experience in developing Symbian OS based mobile phones and commercializing cutting-edge mobile phones for NTT DOCOMO, we will further drive activities to develop the foundation and the Symbian platform," said Nobuo Ohtani, President, Mobile Phones Unit, Fujitsu Limited.

Fujitsu Firsts for Symbian:

    * 2002: Fujitsu produced the first 3G phone for NTT DOCOMO's FOMA 3G network, the F2051
    * 2003: Fujitsu created the first videophone, the F2102 V
    * 2004: Fujitsu created the first Flash-based Symbian OS phone, the F900i

As a Board Member of the Symbian Foundation, Fujitsu will work with foundation members to contribute to the development of the Symbian platform and is committed to Symbian's continued commercial success.

Symbian is a complete and open mobile operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. It includes everything a manufacturer or operator needs to build a mobile device. Symbian was built for mobile from the beginning and enables mobile developers to use open SDKs to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all Symbian based handsets.

There are over 150 members in the Symbian Foundation including mobile operators, handset manufacturers, software companies, and semi-conductor companies.
