Quickoffice 5.0: More than Office 2007 support - Quickoffice Inc. is launching the latest version of Quickoffice for S60 today. The headline feature is support for Microsoft Office 2007 documents. However, Paul Moreton vice president of product management at Quickoffice Inc. explains that the latest version offers much more.

Sony Ericsson Content Awards: Part of the Big Picture - The winners of the inaugural Sony Ericsson Content Awards were announced on Tuesday 18 December. .Net Compact Framework for S60 Heads for the Real World - At CTIA Red Five Labs announced, along with a couple of licensing agreements, that Net60 will be available commercially from 28 April. This news has gone largely unheralded, but could shake up the Symbian application landscape.

Mobile leaders to unify the Symbian software platform and set the future of mobile free - After 10 years, Nokia and Industry Setting Symbian OS Free... Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO have announced their intent to unite Symbian OST, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Foundation to be established to provide royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation. To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. 

Demand For Converged Devices Soars - Nokia's Buyout of Symbian and movement to open source - All the talk today in the mobile space is about the announcement for the Symbian Foundation, an open source movement that sees the future of the World's leading operating system moving forward as an open source, not-for-profit project, this thanks to the contributions of Nokia (Symbian, S60), Sony Ericsson and Motorola (UIQ) and NTT DoCoMo (MOAP(S)). Coming Down from the Nokia OpenLab08 High - We'll I'm back from a whirl-wind journey to Finland where myself, along with about 3 dozen other bloggers, new media technologists, early adopters of mobile technology and social media technology gurus, had a chance to discuss the what, where, when and why of mobile, particularly with respect to social networks, social media, and the geo-social web.  There were no correct answers, there were no stupid comments, there were no misfits or outcasts, there was simply a group of cool, clever people sharing their stories and offering up insights from their own special corner of the social web. I was there providing insight into my thoughts on the geo-social web and other location-aware solutions that enables users take advantage of to expand their networks and share their experiences. If I left with anything, it was the reinforcement that geo-social networking is hot and it's going to be HUGE!

Nokia Email Service (Beta) Q&A With the Management Team at Nokia - I was recently offered an invitation to sit in on an informal Q&A with the Nokia Email Service (Beta) Management Team. Via Tangler, we bombarded the team with questions for an hour. We learned a number of things about NES today including that we should look for a "predictable" price point for the service rolling out in 20 countries to start - the focus of the NES dev team: scanning inbox/reading/deleting/reply/composing email.

Vines 101 Share and Connect your life - Nokia viNe, Share Your Photos, Video, Music on a map - Nokia viNe application will be rolled out of Beta soon... possibly even this week. viNe is a web service that enables users of the application to share their journeys, along with media collected along the way. As a long-time Sports Tracker user, N95 enthusiasts, and evangelist of all things mobile and geospatial, I was provided with a pre-release version of viNe - details and a complete "How To" install and use the application are provided... enjoy!

A Week In The Life of a Nokia E71 User - Enter The Social Media User's Dream Device - It was back in June 2008 that the E71 was officially released to the public - the selling points for the E71 were a sleek, stylish do-it-all device that came with Mail for Exchange mobile email client - pre-loaded with the Nokia E71. Symbian event Promises Change to US mobile market - report from event + AT&T insights - I recently returned from a day in San Francisco, CA where I had a chance to attend a special Symbian Partner event - interesting timing for this event as just this past week the Nokia purchase of Symbian became final (the ink wasn't even dry yet). Also of interest was the presence of keynote speaker Roger Smith from AT&T, coincidentally, just last week AT&T had announced the company will be reducing about 4% of their workforce - they also officially announced that they would be carrying the Nokia 6650 

Lightning Notes from Symbian Partner Event 08 - A Roadmap for Mobile Innovation - Symbian Partner Event took place in San Francisco, CA early in December (Dec 4, 2008 to be exact). We heard from and met execs from Symbian, Nokia, Symbian Foundation as well as the Foundation's sponsors and supporters.
