AuthenTec Addresses Strong Demand for Fingerprint-Enabled Symbian Phones Print E-mail
Written by AuthenTec
Tuesday, 05 August 2008
AuthenTec, the world’s leading provider of fingerprint sensors and solutions, has announced that it has surpassed the 7 million shipment milestone of AuthenTec-enabled Symbian phones and that it has joined the Symbian Partner Network.

More Than 7 Million AuthenTec-Enabled Phones Powered by Symbian OS Have Been Shipped, Comprising 14 Mobile Phone Models

The two companies have collaborated for more than five years, resulting in the shipment of more than 7 million mobile phones that utilize AuthenTec’s award-winning fingerprint sensors and market leading Symbian OS. Fourteen fingerprint-enabled phone models using AuthenTec’s TruePrint®-based sensors have now launched including NTT DOCOMO’s new Fujitsu FOMA F906i smartphone. Announced in early June, this phone uses Symbian’s latest offering, Symbian OS v9.3, and AuthenTec’s small form factor AES1710 sensor. Every fingerprint-enabled device based on Symbian OS today uses an AuthenTec sensor.

“We’re pleased to expand our long-standing relationship with AuthenTec to address a growing market for fingerprint-enabled mobile phones that combine Power of Touch functionality with Symbian OS v9.3,” said Mike Whittingham, Vice President Ecosystem Development, Symbian. “We look forward to working with them and expanding fingerprint sensor technologies that further enhance mobile phone capabilities, security and the user experience.”

"Symbian has earned its reputation as a leader in smartphone operating systems, and we’re pleased to expand our relationship with them via the new Symbian Partner Network," said Art Stewart, AuthenTec Vice President of Wireless Products. "Symbian’s newest operating system, Symbian OS v9.3, brings unprecedented capabilities to the majority of today’s high-end feature phones and smartphones. Our award-winning fingerprint sensors complement these devices by conveniently protecting both personal and corporate data, providing advanced user input control and enabling secure m-commerce transactions.”

The market for Symbian phones continues to expand. Eight handset manufacturers launched 13 new Symbian models (multiple variants not included) in Q1 2008, bringing the total number of models in the market to 154 with a total of 235 models shipped since the formation of Symbian. These cover a broad range of market segments and form factors including high-end converged devices, smartphones and mid-range mobile phones. The majority of these new phones are based on Symbian OS v9 including Symbian’s latest product offering, Symbian OS v9.3, which is currently shipping in Japan.
