Developer Tip - Quick Recipes with Symbian OS Print E-mail
Written by Glenn Letham
Tuesday, 08 July 2008
New from Symbian Fress... "Quick Recipes with Symbian OS" by Michael Aubert, a first time author for Symbian Press. The book introduces Symbian C++ to developers who are not familiar with it.

Who is the Book For?

Our first goal was to introduce Symbian C++ to developers who are not familiar with it.

It is targeted at people who know C++ but have never developed for mobile devices, for example, those who are used to the desktop or server environments and who want to branch into mobile development. This book is also for mobile developers who have previously targeted one of the competing mobile platforms (for example, BREW, Linux, or Windows Mobile) and who are considering working on Symbian OS.

We also wanted the book to be accessible to academic staff and university students, to complement the Symbian Academy program. Finally, for people who already have some experience with Symbian C++, but are not fully-fledged experts in all things Symbian just yet, we wanted to write a book that will help them make the ‘quantum leap’ to the next level of development.

About the Book

The recipes are divided by technology, and include those for graphics, multimedia, location-based services, networking and messaging. Each chapter is self-contained so you can pick and mix those ingredients you are interested in. Each recipe explains the length of time needed to implement it, and its difficulty level. The task is then explained in detail, and provides snippets of example code. The full sample code is provided for future reference and for use as a starting point in your own projects.

The book also includes a 'Getting Started' chapter and another chapter that describes the essential idioms of Symbian C++. The book closes with an explanation of best practices, tips and tricks, and how to prepare your application for release - taking you from novice cook to cordon bleu chef in under 400 pages!
