Energy Costs of Corporate Telephony Exposed: 74% Power Savings by Going Mobile Print E-mail
Written by OnRelay
Friday, 13 June 2008
OnRelay, a pioneer in Mobile PBX, has issued a second wake up call for businesses to reconsider their investment in redundant IP Telephony hardware. OnRelay’s latest research study has found that the 25 million IP desk phones projected to be purchased in 2008 consume 1.6 billion Watts of power. This is equivalent to the needs of a 300,000 person UK city, which is more than Oxford and Cambridge, England, combined.

Staggering energy waste can power an entire city of 300,000

OnRelay’s previous study, “Green Benefits of Fixed Mobile Convergence”², found that IP desk phones sold in 2008 will generate 47 million kg of e-waste – equivalent to the weight of a WWII battleship. OnRelay’s newest study “Green Benefits of Mobile PBX”, released today, shows that by replacing the majority of IP desk phones with mobile phones, a 74% savings in power consumption by telephony equipment can be achieved.

Telephony equipment is one of the biggest heat sources in the data center. Just to cool and run telephony equipment for a 10,000 person company requires 640 kW of power. At current UK electricity prices, this costs a corporate nearly £600,000.

Indeed, according to a recent Gartner report, 70 percent of CIO’s are reporting that power and/or cooling issues are now their single largest problem in data centers. It surprises many to learn that, in data centers today, power and cooling cost more than the IT equipment it supports.

The global call to drastically reduce emissions has all businesses and consumers assessing how they can reduce their carbon footprint. For CIOs analysing their telecoms infrastructure, technologies are available today that can allow them to replace – or not install – inefficient desk phones with mobile phones without losing desk phone functionality or control over their corporate telephony.

It is also important to note, that the business transition to mobile phones does not increase the total amount of energy used by mobile phones, because most business people already carry at least one mobile device. Indeed, OnRelay MBX’s ability to separate personal and business in the same mobile device can serve to reduce the number of mobiles carried and charged.

Peter de Schulthess, Product Marketing Director of OnRelay, comments: “Simply put, using public mobile networks is far more efficient than building and maintaining a private IP telephony network inside a company. It seems to me, that if consumers are now diligently turning off standby devices, corporations should follow the same path and not to leave desk phones on all day and all night. By deploying OnRelay’s MBX software product, companies can reduce both waste from the unused, redundant hardware and the significant amount of power required. OnRelay is leading the way to the centralised telephony infrastructure with its Mobile PBX – demonstrating both environmental and commercial benefits for enterprises.”
