The Bob Iannucci podcast... this morning I kicked back with a coffee and listened to a podcast provided by Nokia. The 9 minute interview provided a look at the future of mobility as perceived by Nokia CTO Bob Iannucci and answers questions like: Is Nokia A Tech Company?
Nokia's James Waterworth conducted the interview as part of a regular series of Nokia executive interviews that are made available to the press. Some items of interest from the podcast:
What excites Iannucci? In a genuine response, Iannucci described how the industry is a hotbed of innovation where people see many opportunities in mobile - this innovation gets Bob going! He cited how things are somewhat similar to the 80's when the PC was taking off and driving innovation. This time we have history to look back on and learn from.
Iannucci on what's coming to mobile When asked about the future roadmap Iannucci noted how in the past services were focused on providing a single service. Now the industry has moved to a point where the deliver of a broad range of services is possible - think OVI. He did note how the true value of mobile services lies in the software and delivery mechanism - kudos to the developers! The evolution of the mobile services engine is creating many opportunities for developers.
To end this segment Iannucci noted that he would like Nokia to be at the center of open innovation for mobility.. indeed it appears that this may be the case although we'll have to wait and see how this unfolds (enter Google Android, Yahoo!'s mobile initiatives, the OMA and others).
With respect to staying on top, Iannucci commented that the key to this is openness. Nokia takes this very seriously and is actively listening. They also view users and partners as the innovators - "they are adding the value."
Research is also a key part of staying on top - think Nokia Research Labs. Iannucci commented that partnerships with research facilities (universities), developers (Forum Nokia), and other technology partners (HP, Adobe etc...) are of paramount importance enabling a valuable collaborative effort.
Is Nokia A Technology Company? Tech companies typically provide components for products, noted Iannucci. Thus, he indicated that Nokia is likely better considered as a technology products and services company; one that is creating a technology-enabled future - funny, I was waiting for him to say that Nokia is an Internet company! Iannucci considers the 14,500 strong research and development team at Nokia to be the company's crown jewel.
What Gets You Going? Finally, when Iannucci was asked about his favorite research project he quickly began to describe the Point & Find technology that the research team has been working on - we also heard about this recently at Nokia World in Amsterdam. Point & Click essentially enables the fusion of the digital and information world... imagine a user captures an image (perhaps of a shoe)... the camera has captured the digital image and now the technology recognizes it, searches and retrieves related information about a shoe from the web.. perhaps informing the user where they can buy them or maybe the history of the shoe etc... Iannucci is most excited about this technology where mobility enables change and mobility provides a front-end to web search... imagine the keyless search!
Thanks to James Waterworth and Bob Iannucci for providing us with this entertaining look at the future of mobility.
Note: Bob Iannucci is the Chief Technology Officer of Nokia Corp. Iannucci was head of Nokia Research Center until Jan 1, 2008 when he was promoted to CTO.
