In the latest IEEE Pervasive Computing special edition on Urban Computing, Eiman Kanjo and Peter Lanshoff of University of Cambridge put the Nokia N95 to use monitoring pollution.
Bicycle couriers in Cambridge are now providing researchers with real time, location based information on the levels of pollution in and around the city. Linking Nokia N95's to a small unit capable of measuring carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and nitrogen dioxide and recording the phones location researchers are able to monitor pollution levels.
Results of this pollution monitoring can be seen here >>
Future enhancements planned include the ability to monitor carbon dioxide as well as the level of traffic noise using the microphone in an S60 device.
