Written by Glenn Letham
Monday, 10 December 2007
At Nokia World 2007 in Amsterdam we heard many numbers and saw many charts, figures, diagrams etc... the following are a few numbers of interest and small statements (with a BIG message) heard in sessions, panels, and presentations... enjoy!

Interesting Numbers from Nokia World 2007

one quarter (1/4) - Recent research findings by Nokia have shown that within 5 years time more than one quarter of all consumed media will be created within the mobile user community where it is then distributed, shared, edited within the user community – think collaborative, social media.

3000  - More than 3000 registered attendees in Amsterdam taking in Nokia World 2007... this up from 40 attendees of the first event.

3310.. part of the essentials segment.. has all the functionality people need but also made responsible with recycled material… more green devices will come as well.

9,000 - research took place between July and September 2007. 9,000 consumers, who are active users of technology and own a mobile device [not restricted to Nokia] aged 16-35 were questioned. Of the 9,000 consumers we surveyed:
- 23% buy movies in digital format
- 35% buy music on MP3 files
- 25% buy music on mobile devices
- 39% watch TV on the internet
- 23% watch TV on mobile devices

Millions - Nokia Comes With Music.  This is not a streaming service but all the songs are there for users. Too good to be true!! Millions of songs available to all users any time any place!

5,000,000 - more than 5 million apps are downloaded per month via Nokia content download

100,000,000 - Anticipating what’s next from the users… recall 2001 in Barcelona... since then more than 100 million devices shipped.

200,000,000  - a key milestone was recently reached as the number of feature-rich “power” device users (aka. The S60 segment) surpassed the 200 million mark.

Statements, Quotes, and Notable Notes from Nokia World 2007 - the following are some small statements picked up on that had a BIG message.

Technology trend - Converged devices are going mainstream.

Managing my complete digital life… integrating digital information and making it easy to manage the relationships... enter Ovi!

Ovi means services - Ovi will be the one-stop destination for community, content and Nokia services (music, games, maps and much more)

Currently at internal Beta status, Ovi will be rolled out to more people over the next year and will grow up/mature through out 2008.

First and foremost it’s about simplicity.

Green Packaging saves $ - The company notes that as a small benefit, fewer trucks are needed to deliver the packaging which is saving some 100 million euros per year already!

PangeaDay, scheduled to take place May 10, 2008 – a day brought to the masses by film. Millions around the World will be united through film encouraging them to work to build a better future. You can get involved and submit your film at pangeaday.org

Many people now use their phone as their only music device.

Data traffic usage statistics from recent research - 52% browsing, multimedia 30% messaging 12%

NG - Imagine waiting for a subway for 30 minutes, why not articles, music, and other suggestions be sent to you while you wait? If the service realizes what context your in then the service responds accordingly.. this is wen Ng.. convergence of mobility and the internet.

Women as a rising power in the economy… women make the majority of decisions on purchase.

Clearly there’s a mobile revolution - A Strategy is based on multiple software platforms (Lee Epting, Forum Nokia)

Open and Embracing open source – cost savings – reuse of components, reuse without having to rebuild - save costs. Code has been used and rebuilt and made better by the community - think flexible and flexibility.

winners of the Nokia Open C Challenge - open source for open solutions!

Little things make a big difference… for example, the type of charging unit makes a huge diff… the ability to use existing headsets like 3.5 mm headset plugs can convince a consumer to purchase.

People want things that work… must be in a neat package, nice surprises… contemporary simplicity… the battery lasts… these are what people want.

Sequels are design to milk a brand and movies are not designed to be continuous… they are designed for money. 20 percent of movies are re-makes or derived from another product… trying for a continuous experience. This is where mobile could be important.

Fuleing the fire is web video, blogging, social networking, user-generated content, mobile devices - the 20th century content model is nearing an end.

We can do better with mobile… on demand mobile should be easier to get the content.. people should get it right away.

We need to charge a lot less and this will get the consumers attention

Doing the familiar and simply porting it to mobile will not work.

Safe is stupid, be extraordinary and outrageous.. this will be hot.

Improve the mobile experience... better design is needed… innovate the UI and do it fast.

Multi touch is cool, make it clear, animated icons, make it fun and cool.. people will use it. Usability is very important… give people a cradle for docking so you can get your stuff while you sleep.

Mobile Ads.. It’s a judge global business 520 billion yr.. will grow faster in the emerging markets particularly as wealth grows. Increasingly interactive.

The future of ads is mobile… 3 billion devices, subsidized cost of usage, commerce enabled via the device.

Killer apps and must have services that are pervasive

What do advertisers want? They want ROI first and foremost… needed and expected from any new medium. Mobile ads are showing great ROI… SMS, browser ads, game based ect… all doing well. Every channel has a role to play.

Why isn’t mobile advertising bigger right now? Tough to buy across carriers - Not enough mass buying points - Operators and publishers have a narrow reach

Navigation is selling like crazy even though the user often don’t need directions… adding traffic and other data makes this even more  valuable.

Real time and meaningful content is crucial.  Capture the moment!

The new traffic experience: Plan, setup alerts and profiles, get live data.. dynamic.. can also be enhanced with feedback and community features.

Location makes ads more relevant - personalized, relevant content for the advertisers is enabled.

Research has shown that many users view the mobile ads as somewhat of a service

Consumers want more meaningful and relevant content

Slifter GPS shopping is a fine example of a location-aware app

As part of the research Nokia have identified four key driving trends; Immersive Living; Geek Culture;  G Tech and Localism. These trends are currently sitting on the edge, but as these trends become more mainstream, they will have a collaborative, creative effect on the way people consume entertainment and, we predict, will lead to the Circular Entertainment phenomenon (Source: Nokia)

Word of mouth is the holy grail…

The web will be a diff experience in 2008 than 2007  (Anssi Vanjokia, Executive VP Nokia)
