The Platform Promise: S60 Devices From Samsung - Java technology was heralded as write-once-run-everywhere - we know the reality was somewhat different. As the first Samsung S60 devices arrive in the SymbianOne offices Richard Bloor asks if the S60 platform serves Symbian C++ developers better. In this article Bloor tests the Samsung SGH-G810, SGH-I550, SGH-L870, and SGH-I8510 (INNOV8) S60 devices.

Avaya one-X(TM) Mobile Expands Delivery of Unified Communications to the Broadest Range of Mobile Devices

- Avaya one-X Mobile to support Apple iPhone to provide secure access to corporate telephony, voicemail, call logs, and corporate directories from the popular consumer device

- Avaya one-X Mobile now available for RIM, Palm OS, Java and WAP devices in addition to Symbian and Windows Mobile

- Supports both Avaya and Cisco unified communications environments

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Avaya Inc., a global leader in business communications applications, software and services, today announced that Avaya one-X(TM) Mobile will support Apple iPhone. The company also announced the availability of Avaya one-X(TM) Mobile for RIM, Palm, Java and WAP mobile devices. The first company to announce access to enterprise communications from the iPhone, Avaya now extends this access from the broadest range of mobile devices of any enterprise communications manufacturer today.

Avaya one-X Mobile allows businesses and employees to extend unified communications - from both Avaya and Cisco. Avaya one-X Mobile unites enterprise and mobile networks, allowing the two to work together more effectively while increasing the value of existing investments in communications infrastructure.

With Avaya one-X Mobile, an easy-to-use, downloadable interface now converts mobile devices from RIM, Palm, Motorola, LG, Nokia, Samsung, Sanyo, Sony Ericsson and others into another endpoint on the corporate network. From the iPhone, users will have iPhone optimized access to the Avaya one-X Mobile interface, providing the same ability to make the iPhone their personal remote control for enterprise communications.

"The reality is that many enterprises out there have mobile workforces using a variety of devices from a variety of vendors. Enterprise solutions that support multiple mobile operating systems and reference designs for both smartphones and features phones have a distinct advantage in becoming pervasive productivity tools," says Sean Ryan, Research Analyst, Mobile Enterprise Device Solutions at IDC. "While organizations are keen to reign in the numbers and types of enterprise ready devices, mobile workers and business decision makers are moving in the opposite direction."

Powerful Benefits and Features for Companies and Employees

Since one-X Mobile routes business calls through the company's network, businesses and organizations improve employee responsiveness to customers, worker productivity and business continuity while reducing mobile calling costs and supporting compliance requirements. Employees are accessible to customers and colleagues through a single number regardless of their location and can remain available during emergency or planned outages. Companies subject to compliance requirements can record calls taken or made through the mobile device and have a single source for call records.

Workers now have the power of their desk phone in their pocket, plus greater control over managing their time and availability. Inbound calls to their extension can simultaneously ring up to five designated endpoints, so they can take calls where they need to be - in or out of the office, on the road or at home. At the same time, VIP screening enables them to control privacy by setting parameters on which live calls ring through and when. In addition, with one-X Mobile, employees can:

-- Visually view voice messages and select which ones to play immediately
from the device without dialing into the corporate voice mail platform.
-- Search the corporate directory, personal phonebook, and access call
logs and remotely initiate the call or callback through the corporate
extension while keeping their personal mobile number private
-- Eliminate the need for a mobile mailbox (if desired), helping to ensure
     that messages aren't missed
-- Seamlessly switch from the mobile device to desk phone in mid-call with
     the push of a button
-- Set special call handling rules based on GPS location, time of day,
     etc.

Western Kentucky University Mobilizes with Avaya one-X Mobile

For Western Kentucky University, a large, fast-growing institution with several remote campuses, flexibility, ease-of-use and user control make Avaya one-X Mobile a highly attractive, "solid" application. Students, staff and faculty can be connected to the university's network using their choice of mobile devices. According to Edwin Craft, Director of Telecommunications for WKU, the user interface and web client make it simple enough to access features, set and unset preferences such as location changes, call forwarding or VIP call routing -- that can inspire use even among those who are most reluctant to adopt new technology. Craft is even mulling over a plan for the future:

"One of the biggest hurdles facing universities is resident life. Students today use cell phones and mobile devices instead of dorm phones. But, since those cell phones often come from home, schools may not have accurate information if changes aren't updated, and the university incurs long distance charges when it tries to contact a student who's on campus and the call goes to his or her home area code."

Craft envisions using one-X Mobile and assigning each student a number that he or she keeps for the duration of their education at the school. The student will still be able to use the device they prefer -- even maintaining the home area code number -- but still reachable through a four- or five-digit number off the university network -- whether they live on campus or off. The University can broadcast voice messages and alerts, push content and improve campus community and safety.

A True, Multi-vendor Solution for Maximum Flexibility

Avaya one-X Mobile is a server-software solution that supports Avaya Communication Manager and Modular Messaging software as well as Cisco CallManager and Unity messaging, enabling companies to consistently support mobile devices even in mixed environments. In addition, the solution provides access to Microsoft Active Directory and LDAP directories.

The solution is available as part of the Avaya Unified Communications Standard Edition. The Avaya Unified Communications Standard Edition is an applications suite providing enterprise telephony, conferencing and mobility solutions to support employees anywhere they need to work to be effective, enabling access through Avaya clients, web portals, Microsoft Office Communicator or IBM Lotus Sametime. Avaya one-X Mobile can also be purchased separately.

Avaya one-X Mobile for RIM, Palm OS, Java, WAP, Symbian and Windows Mobile is available now in North America through Avaya direct sales and authorized Avaya channel partners. Avaya one-X Mobile for iPhone will be available in North America early 2008 and will be provided automatically to new customers of one-X Mobile.
