Sony Ericsson P1 smartphone added to Developer World Virtual Lab remote testing service Print E-mail
Written by Richard Bloor
Tuesday, 16 October 2007
The Sony Ericsson P1 smartphone is now included in Sony Ericsson Developer World's Virtual Lab, extending this early-access, on-line remote testing service to Symbian OS™ and UIQ 3 developers. This means that registered Community members can now conduct real-time testing sessions on some of the latest 2007 phones representative of both the Java™ ME and UIQ 3 development platforms, in a quick and effective manner.

"The UIQ 3 Platform allows developers to potentially target UIQ 3-based phones using a single code line, so getting early-access to the P1 smartphone through the Virtual Lab speeds up application development for all UIQ 3-based phones. Sony Ericsson believes in the benefits of developing in a rich, open architecture and the UIQ Platform offers the C++, OpenGL ES, Java ME CDC and CLDC programming environments, all of which can now be tested on a real P1, in real-time, over your Web browser at any time of the day, seven days a week," said Ulf Wretling, General Manager and Head of Developer Program & Communications at Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson Developer World's Virtual Lab service is powered by Mobile Complete's DeviceAnywhere™ platform and hosted as a dedicated service exclusively available to Sony Ericsson Developer World members on Mobile Complete's website.

Sony Ericsson P1: feature-rich smartphone

Based on Symbian OS v9.1 and UIQ 3.0, the Sony Ericsson P1 smartphone features a 3.2 Megapixel camera, a large QVGA touch screen with a transreflective display and dual-function keyboard. Multimedia and business connectivity are boosted by integrated WLAN, VoIP enabled, secure push email with ActiveSync® and BlackBerry Connect (BBC) 4.0 support, Opera 8 web browser with horizontal wide-screen browsing, RSS feed support and picture blogging.

Developers can program in both C++ and Java ME (CLDC 1.1 and CDC 1.0), use the WLAN API to create applications using WiFi and take advantage of hardware accelerated 3D graphics supported by both the OpenGL ES API and JSR 184.

Touchscreen, WiFi and IMEI numbers

You can do almost anything on a Virtual Lab phone that you could do if the phone was physically in your hand, for example press keypad and side buttons, view screen display, hear speaker and ringer sounds, connect/disconnect the battery, make calls, send/receive text messages, take photographs and browse Web sites. You can make full use of the P1's touchscreen. Instead of using the phone's stylus, you use your computer's mouse to select the actions on the phone's screen.

The P1 smartphone includes integrated Wireless LAN (WiFi) and you can use the WLAN API to create applications using WiFi connectivity. A WiFi connection is available in the Sony Ericsson Virtual Lab to use while testing – just enable the WiFi connection on the P1 and the "DeviceAnywhere-wifi" requires no password.

Browsing the web using the P1 smartphone in the Virtual Lab.

There are two P1 examples in the Virtual Lab and both phone's unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers are published in the DeviceAnywhere Studio online collaboration tool. To retrieve the IMEI number during a testing session, select a P1 smartphone and right click on the phone, a pop-up window will appear called "Device Properties" and the IMEI number is displayed under the "SIM" tab.

There are two Developer Certificates (DevCerts) specifically available for these two P1s that can be downloaded from the "MyVirtual Lab" page in the members-only "MySettings" section. These Developer Certificates will grant access for Basic and Extended capabilities. The IMEI numbers for both P1s in the Virtual Lab can be used to create other Developer Certificates if necessary and for more information please visit the Symbian Signed website.

Virtual Lab is exclusive to members

As this is a members-only service, login and click on "MySettings" to access the "MyVirtualLab" page for more information, known phone firmware issues, terms and conditions, and the link to Sony Ericsson Developer World's Virtual Lab hosted on Mobile Complete's DeviceAnywhere website.

If you are not a registered Community Member yet, it only takes five minutes to register and when you log in to Developer World, click on "MySettings" and then "MyVirtualLab" to access the Virtual Lab service. Register here>>
