SymbianOne Feature Article

The Platform Promise: S60 Devices From Samsung - Java technology was heralded as write-once-run-everywhere - we know the reality was somewhat different. As the first Samsung S60 devices arrive in the SymbianOne offices Richard Bloor asks if the S60 platform serves Symbian C++ developers better. In this article Bloor tests the Samsung SGH-G810, SGH-I550, SGH-L870, and SGH-I8510 (INNOV8) S60 devices.

New device management features boost Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite Print E-mail
Written by Nokia

Nokia unveils today the new device management features of its Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite. Wider device support, tighter integration to enhance user experience, remote control, improved theft-loss protection and hardware control allow IT managers to enhance and scale customer support while reducing support costs.

Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite delivering tangible benefits for IT managers and end-users alike

"We are seeing a strong interest from European and global operators and business customers for device management functions that mirror those of the IT environment," said Scott Cooper, senior vice president, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia. "By adding the new capabilities into our current suite of products, we are responding to the market demand and accelerating the adoption of business mobility beyond mobile email."

The new device management features of Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite are:

- remote control for easy troubleshooting of mobile devices over-the-air

- ability to control hardware elements such as disabling the use of camera or WLAN on a mobile device

- enhanced theft-loss protection

Remote control of Windows Mobile devices

Administrators are able to wirelessly take control of a device not directly in their hands and visually see the screen of the device. Helpdesk users are able to access these devices, as if they are actually holding them, for troubleshooting, initial provisioning, upgrades, and training purposes. Initially, the remote control feature supports Windows Mobile devices, with Symbian support to follow in future releases. Remote control is offered as part of a Nokia Intellisync Device Management license.

Control of hardware elements for Windows Mobile devices

Administrators can disable/enable selected hardware elements on end-user devices such as the camera, Bluetooth, WLAN, infrared and memory card. A user receives a pop-up screen notification that hardware functionality is disabled. The setting cannot be overridden by the end-user. This new functionality gives the option to disable functions like the camera on a mobile device in case company policy does not allow cameras on their premises. Control of hardware elements is offered as part of a Nokia Intellisync Device Management license.

New theft-loss protection features

Power-on-password is now supported for S60 3rd Edition Nokia Eseries and Nokia Nseries devices via the Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite client. This functionality uses the device built-in "lock" application. Similarly, hard reset is supported for S60 3rd Edition Nokia Nseries devices. The functionality uses the built-in device "factory reset" application.

Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite provides businesses with the flexibility, manageability, and extensibility to connect any corporate data to any device, over almost any network, to meet both current and future mobility needs.
