Operators - Making or Breaking Mobility? TruPhone’s recent victory over the UK
arm of T-Mobile highlights a continuing problem with mobile innovation. TruPhone’s
excellent VoIP solution was seen as a threat to T-Mobile’s voice call revenue.
In the same vein, US operators have forced several device manufacturers to supply
crippled versions of their devices; this usually involves disabling WiFi capabilities
to protect data traffic revenues.
In general Operators tend not to be at the cutting edge, at least not in Europe
and the US. Part of the story is about protecting existing revenues. But it is
not the whole story, as Operator’s tend to look for the mass market opportunities;
those products or services that will be used by a high proportion of their customers.
This inevitably means that innovative software solutions will catch them out,
undercutting their existing revenue base.
With smartphones becoming a significant part of the mobile phone market and social
networks making it easy for interesting new applications to find a strong following,
the problem for operators is only going to get worse.
Operators could react by continuing to attempt to lock out these solutions or
they could take a proactive approach and bring these solutions onboard. The approach
taken by Orange through its partner program is perhaps one of the best in this
regard, although other operators are taking a similar approach. Hopefully an open
attitude will prevail and Operators will be the vanguards of mobility, not the
courts.
