New Relationship Enables Broadcom to Target Over 50 Million New Devices per Year
With 3G Cellular Processors, Mobile, Application Processors, Low Power W-Fi(R),
Bluetooth(R) and GPS Solutions
IRVINE, Calif., July 25 -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM) , a global leader
in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that
it has joined S60 Product Creation Community. As a member of this development
group, Broadcom will be provided with access to software, technology and S60 ecosystem
resources for developing advanced smartphones based on S60 software. S60 smartphone
software is developed by Nokia and licensed to industry-leading terminal manufacturers.
"Broadcom joining the S60 community is a very positive development that will
further enhance the silicon resources available to smartphone makers committed
to S60 software," said Matti Vanska, Vice President, Mobile Software Sales and
Marketing, Nokia. "The combination of advanced S60 software capabilities and pre-integration
with Broadcom's silicon solutions will help drive new smartphone designs and shorten
time-to-market for introducing these products."
With the recent introduction of the Broadcom(R) BCM2153 7.2Mbps HSDPA multimedia
baseband processor, Broadcom is uniquely positioned to deliver a broad range of
single chip smartphone solutions developed in the advanced 65 nm process. Broadcom's
Mobile Multimedia processors, including BCM2820 VideoCore(R) Applications Processor
and BCM2724 VideoCore Co-processor deliver compelling user experiences and a flexible
platform for innovation. The BCM4325 monolithic Bluetooth+WiFi+FM device and BCM2048
Bluetooth + FM radio transceiver are ideal solutions for offering complementary
connectivity options in next generation smartphone products.
In addition, Broadcom's recent acquisition of GlobalLocate for GPS (Global Positioning
System) solutions, and Broadcom's complete line of power management and RF solutions
round out the extensive list of products Broadcom now offers to S60 customers.
As a member of the S60 Product Creation Community, Broadcom can work with S60
ecosystem members to integrate Symbian OS(R) and S60 software on Broadcom's Mobile
platforms.
S60 software on Symbian OS is the world's leading smartphone software, supported
by many leading mobile phone manufacturers, who license the platform for use in
their respective products. S60 devices are intuitive and easy to use, enabling
users to quickly discover and install new and exciting applications. S60 sets
the benchmark for mobile browsers offering the full web experience in a mobile
device making the platform ideally suited for the advanced multimedia and data-centric
applications which are becoming popular in smartphones today.
"Broadcom is very proud to join the S60 Product Creation Community, which allows
us to offer our advanced mobile solutions together with the world's leading Mobile
Open OS platform," said Yossi Cohen, Senior Vice President and General Manager
of Broadcom's Mobile Platforms Group. "This development is a strong validation
of Broadcom's commitment to establishing itself as the technology leader in the
cellular market, and we look forward to working closely with the community to
quickly bring superior and exciting handsets to market."
Broadcom has emerged as a leading supplier of cellular baseband, multimedia,
and applications processors, and other silicon and software solutions for next
generation handset products. By uniquely combining multiple world-class dedicated
processors and baseband functionality onto low power, single-chip products, Broadcom
is introducing new levels of affordability and performance for the next generation
mobile devices.
BCM2153 Product Information
The BCM2153 is the industry's first solution for mobile handsets that integrates
an HSDPA baseband modem with world-class applications, audio and multimedia processors
on a single monolithic chip. The new mixed-signal device is the first developed
completely in a 65 nanometer CMOS process and integrates a Category 8 HSDPA modem
that delivers 7.2 Mbps (megabits per second) of third generation (3G) connectivity
for advanced applications. With this level of integration, smartphones utilizing
the new HSDPA processor require less board space, cost and power than competing
solutions, significantly reducing the cost premium associated with smartphones
today.
