May 25, 2007, Brentwood Bay, Canada: To encourage participation in MobileRated's
free and legal mobile phone games download site, MobileRated initiated a contest
for developers. The contest ran from October 1, 2006 through March 31, 2007.
The most popular game, based upon downloads as per contest rules, would win
$500 Canadian. The winning game was Jamtris, by Jamos Games.
While many professional game companies participated in the contest, the winning
entry was an open-source game, proving yet again the power of the open source
movement. Open source software enables developers to share source code and ideas,
and collaboration enables rapid development cycles.
"Compared to regular open source computer software, writing an open source mobile
phone game has proved to generate very little feedback," said game creator Tomas
Larsson. "Users tend to download the software and use it, but not to get involved
and interact with the community in the way that happens with computer-based open
source software. Therefore, getting feedback from MobileRated.com users and receiving
recognition for my creation - in the form of this award - is highly valuable to
me and has really motivated me to continue development of the new versions of
the Jamtris game."
MobileRated is an excellent forum for open source development as its community
of users provides game developers with reviews, game ratings, and other feedback
that can be used to enhance development of new products.
The success of Jamtris is a combination of game appeal, recognition factor, wide
handset support, and suitability for the mobile platform. This combination made
Jamtris appealing for first time visitors to the MobileRated site while remaining
a favourite for repeat visitors. It also crossed the gender and age lines, being
well received by both male and female gamers of all ages.
Jamtris received stiff competition from Bomber, Doom 3D, Underground Racer, and
