Symbian OS development made easier with two new Symbian Press books Print E-mail
Written by Symbian Ltd
Sunday, 13 May 2007
Symbian Limited, developer and licensor of Symbian OS™, the market-leading operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones known as smartphones, has released two new books from Symbian Press.

'The Symbian OS Architecture Sourcebook' and 'Smartphone Operating System Concepts with Symbian OS' launched at Symbian Partner Event 2007

'The Symbian OS Architecture Sourcebook' by Ben Morris and 'Smartphone Operating System Concepts with Symbian OS' by Mike Jipping are comprehensive software development guides written by experienced Symbian developers and aim to make Symbian development faster and more productive.

The first half of 'The Symbian OS Architecture Sourcebook' book includes an introduction to Symbian OS and the mobile telephony market, conducts a rapid tour of the architecture of Symbian OS and provides an introduction to the key ideas of object oriented software. There is also a detailed exploration of the architecture of Symbian OS. The second half of the book presents five case studies, each exploring some aspect of Symbian OS, or of its history and evolution, in depth. In addition, 'The Symbian OS Architecture Sourcebook' contains a component by component reference and a pull-out of the Symbian OS System Model.

'Smartphone Operating System Concepts with Symbian OS' is a textbook, written as an introduction to operating systems for students and others interested in learning more about smartphone platforms, specifically, Symbian OS. There are many text books that describe different aspects of operating systems, but most bypass mobile phone operating systems and the additional features functionality that is required for these sophisticated devices. The book presents and discusses operating system concepts and includes exercises that compare and contrast Symbian OS, Linux and Microsoft Windows. These assignments can be worked on in a classroom laboratory or in a student's own time.

About the authors

Ben Morris

Ben Morris joined Psion Software in October 1997, working in the SDK team on the production of the first C++ and Java SDKs for what was at that time still Psion Software's EPOC32 operating system. He led the small team that produced the SDKs for the ER5 release of EPOC32, and when Psion Software became Symbian, he took over responsibility for growing and leading the company's new system documentation team, introducing an XML based authoring and documentation build system and 'in-source' documentation processes. In 2002 he joined the newly formed System Management Group in Symbian's Software Engineering organisation, with a brief to 'define the system'. Ben is responsible for devising the original System Model for Symbian OS.

Mike Jipping

Dr. Michael J Jipping is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Hope College, an undergraduate college in south western Michigan. He has been with Hope College for over 13 years, and teaches Hope's offerings in Operating Systems. He teaches other relevant courses for the Computer Science Department: Computer Organization, Networking, and Advanced Topics in Handheld System Programming. He is the system administrator for his department's 40 Unix workstations. Dr. Jipping is a member of ACM, ACM SIGCSE, and EPOC World Developer Network.

'The Symbian OS Architecture Sourcebook' and 'Smartphone Operating System Concepts with Symbian OS' are both published by John Wiley and Sons Ltd. and are available to buy from the company's website at eu.wiley.com or from Amazon at www.amazon.co.uk.
