Nokia To Demonstrate Ongoing Support For Advanced Java Technologies At 2007 JavaOne Event Print E-mail

Nokia to Present Latest Java-enabled Solutions for Mobile Developers, Release New Edition of High-volume Series 40 Platform

JaveOne, San Francisco, CA - May 7, 2007 – Nokia will demonstrate its sustained commitment to mobile software development and the open end-to-end mobile Java™ platform architecture during this week’s 2007 JavaOne event in San Francisco, where Nokia’s global developer support program, Forum Nokia, will participate as a Gold Co-Sponsor in its seventh consecutive year of sponsorship support for the conference and tradeshow.

Nokia’s ongoing commitment to the advancement of the Java platform in the mobile space occurs within the context of a continued worldwide growth in uptake of Java services and content via Java technology-enabled mobile devices. As of end-2006, Nokia alone cumulatively had shipped approximately 540 million devices globally based on Nokia Series 40, S60 and Series 80 platforms for application development, all of which support Java technologies.

In its seventh consecutive year of sponsorship support for JavaOne, Nokia will host numerous events, demos and workshops that demonstrate its leadership in providing device platforms that help developers to build and deliver mobile applications to consumers around the globe in less time, with less effort and at lower cost than competing solutions.

Nokia’s Java experts will participate during the JavaOne show in more than ten presentations exploring developer issues related to mobile platforms, application development and next-generation Java technologies. Among announcements being made by Nokia at 2007 JavaOne are:
• Release of a new, Java-enhanced edition of Nokia’s high-volume Series 40 mobile-development platform, including implementation of the industry’s advanced JSR-248 Mobile Service Architecture specification, designed to provide a consistent set of Java technologies for high-volume mobile handsets;

• Collaborative efforts by Nokia and Sprint in developing the JSR-232 Mobile Operational Management specification (OSGi) and Sprint’s adoption of OSGi technology for use in advanced 3G environments and further consideration of OSGi technology for future 4G environments; and,

• SNAP Mobile’s scheduled 2nd Quarter 2007 release of the SNAP Mobile Client SDK (Version 1.4), a highly useful suite of free developer tools, documentation, and sample code for creating connected Java™ mobile games that run on the SNAP Mobile platform; this latest update is backward-compatible with previous SDK releases and offers more robust handling of networks that have less than optimum performance.

Nokia experts will also be available to meet with attendees at the Nokia booth (#1018), where they will be demonstrating the latest in Nokia applications and initiatives, including Nokia support for Web developers in the mobilization of existing Internet content and Web 2.0 services through WidSets, the mobile phone agnostic global service that lets mobile phone users share user-generated content and gives them easy access via personalized mobile widgets to their favorite internet content and services - without the use of their mobile browsers.

Attendees at the weeklong JavaOne conference are encouraged to participate in Nokia events and workshops and attend panel sessions and presentations by Nokia Java experts, including:

Incorporating shared technologies, open standards, and supporting common technology implementations across Nokia device platforms, Nokia’s leadership efforts have been instrumental in supporting Java technology defragmentation and extensibility.  At the vanguard of mobile developer support, Nokia’s Carbide family of Eclipse-based developer tools include Carbide.j, making it easier for Java developers to take advantage of advanced Java technology capabilities.

Developers attending 2007 JavaOne are encouraged to visit Nokia at booth (#1018) to speak with Nokia’s Java experts, learn about Nokia’s latest mobile development toolkits, see demonstrations of the next generation of mobile devices, or watch one of many brief presentations on development platforms, developer tools, and how to make money in mobile.
