RIP AppForge Print E-mail
Written by SymbianOne
Thursday, 26 April 2007
The option of creating applications for Symbian devices using Microsoft Visual Basic or C# is no more. AppForge has shut up shop, with no sign of any continuing support of the third-party developers.

AppForge Crossfire offered Microsoft developers a way of creating mobile applications for a wide range of platforms including those based on Series 80, S60, and UIQ. However, it appears that AppForge got into financial difficulty and now the intellectual property behind Crossfire has been purchased by Oracle.

A message posted on Oracle's website indicates that the company intends to use the product to service its customers, but will no longer support or sell the AppForge's development or runtime tools. This will leave a number of developers, such as Mastersoft Mobile Solutions, scratching their heads.

There is no information on why AppForge failed, however there have been rumblings regarding their mechanism of licensing the Crossfire client.

More information on the post AppForge world can be found on Wikipedia.
