Live Video from Mobile Phone to Broadcast Control Center Debuts at NAB 2007 Print E-mail
Written by ComVu Media, Inc
Tuesday, 24 April 2007
NAB rocked by ComVu demonstrations of broadcast quality mobile video transmitted live from a Nokia N95 multimedia device direct to Avid nonlinear editing systems.

Las Vegas, Nev.—April 24, 2007—ComVu Media, Inc., the global enabler of mobile Webcasting, recently demonstrated the ground-breaking live video transmitting at 30 fps at 640 x 480 resolution, streaming from a mobile phone over a wireless data network to an Avid® nonlinear editing system.

ComVu used its award-winning PocketCaster software to broadcast full screen video from a Nokia N95 multimedia device, transmitting over HSDPA data connection, which was then imported in real-time by Avid systems (via DV25 over IEEE-1394). With the press of a button, anyone using a Nokia N95 device -- including field reporters -- can now capture and broadcast video directly to air and concurrently stream live video to Web-portals, blogs and 3G-enabled phones.

"This end-to-end solution is poised to reshape the future of news gathering worldwide," says William Mutual, ComVu CEO. "ComVu is excited that its PocketCaster software works with Avid systems that are capable of handling DV25 media; this elegant solution enables anyone to feed high quality video direct to broadcast control centers."

"As mobile devices continue to grow in popularity, it's becoming easier for people to capture video on the fly, especially in breaking-news situations," said Johnathon Howard, director of On-Air Product Management at Avid. "The Nokia N95 with PocketCaster software is a great example of how the world of content creation is changing, and enabling virtually anyone to capture and share video clips to multiple outlets."

"Nokia is pleased to see ComVu leveraging the open platform and powerful video capabilities of the Nokia N95," says Bill Plummer, Vice President, Multimedia Sales and Channel Management, Multimedia, Nokia North America. "This marriage of Nokia handheld multimedia computers to ComVu's PocketCaster application and automated delivery systems and Avid's media solutions heralds an all new era in virtually anytime, anywhere broadcasting."

How it works

PocketCaster allows users to transmit live video from the mobile phone that they always have with them. The video streams directly to ComVu media-servers, where it can be shared live or on-demand with viewers on PCs, Macs and mobile phones.

When running on a Nokia N95 with built-in GPS receiver, PocketCaster automatically embeds geospatial coordinates within each frame of video, providing accurate dynamic mapping of transmission points during a broadcast. PocketCaster eliminates the costs and time delays of uploading media through a PC or Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), uniquely addressing the need for immediacy, flexibility and affordability in mobile news gathering.

To monitor a global network of mobile broadcasters, ComVu's Mobile Video Studio offers a browser-based control center to monitor, manage, and map hundreds of live PocketCaster feeds coming in from the field, and/or archived on ComVu servers. In the broadcasting industry, getting information to viewers quickly is essential. ComVu's PocketCaster and Mobile Video Studio are designed to help broadcasters efficiently capture and deliver breaking news stories from field reporters and citizen journalists.
