Making the developer's life much easier... these SDKs also allow developers with
little or no Symbian C++ development experience to create components for application
that will run on S60 3rd Edition devices.
The Open C SDK plug-in for S60 3rd Edition SDKs provides developers with access
to a comprehensive range of functions from nine well-known standard POSIX and
middleware C libraries — libc, libdl, libpthread, libm, libz, libcrypt, libcrypto,
libglib, and libssl. These Open C libraries provide a Linux-like, vendor-neutral
C-programming interface to core functions on S60 devices. Open C makes it easier
for developers to port a range of existing standard C applications to S60 3rd
Edition.
See Open C SDK Plug-In for S60 3rd Edition SDKs, for Symbian OS, for C++ at forum.nokia.com
In recent discussion at CTIA Wireless with Ravi Belwal, Sr. Technology expert
with Forum Nokia we were informed that the Open C Plug-in is now available for
S60 3rd edition and 3rd edition FP1. Belwar noted that the plug-in for S60 FP2
will be part of the SDK at a later date (ie. near future).
So, what does the plug-in mean? As an example, Oracle has used Open C to port
the popular Berkeley database from Linux to S60 with no programming! The total
build took about 100 hours and the team did not need to know about the Symbian
build process. We're told that another success story in porting to S60 using Open
C comes from SysOpen Digia.
