Where 2.0 brings together business leaders, technical visionaries, and grass
roots developers to show us what's possible now, what's on the horizon, and what's
being developed in university research labs and industry R&D departments.
Session topics will focus on finding value in the geospatial industry. Where will
developers make money? Which applications will strike it rich with businesses?
Which will be rolled out to consumers? Where will enterprises be placing their
bets? And what promising technologies will be attracting the attention of the
venture capital community?
The Speakers and the Sessions
Thought-provoking, revealing, enriching. From government surveillance to cool
new mashups, the sessions at Where 2.0 present some of the best thinking on geospatial
issues today. These are just a few of the speakers and topics featured at Where
2.0:
Di-Ann Eisnor, co-founder of Platial, a people's atlas of favorite places, will
speak on democratizing the map making process with easy-to-use, map-making tools.
Jim Greiner, from MapQuest, will lay out his strategic vison for the future,
and how his company plans to remain the foremost resource for finding places via
the Internet.
Sean Gorman, CEO and a founder of FortiusOne, will explain how maps can deliver
eye-popping social insight and hard economic value using Universal Data Resources.
John Hanke, product director of Google Earth, will talk about building a 3D Model
of the globe using satellite imagery, maps, terrain and 3D modeling software.
Myles McGovern, CEO of Immersive Media Corporation will showcase GeoImmersive
Imagery. Using video capturing techniques and GPS data, video feeds from up to
11 cameras are stitched together into a geo-referenced 360 degree data stream
that takes visual mapping interaction to a whole new level and places a viewer
right in the middle of an environment.
Mor Naaman, research scientist at Yahoo! Research Berkeley, will explain a visualization
technique called "tag mapping" and how armchair travelers can explore the world
through photos using an "attraction map" with Flickr geotagged images.
Eric Rodenback, founder of Stamen Design, combines interactive data visualization
and innovative design in a visually rich, cross-fertilization of ideas and technologies.
Mappr.com, which places Flickr photos on an interactive map of the United States,
is an example of the studio's web-based data visualization work. Stamen recently
released Cabspotting.org, a collaboration with the Exploratorium, which builds
live interactive maps based on GPS positions of taxicabs in San Francisco.
Andrew Turner will introduce the concept of the GeoStack, a collection of tools,
standards and technologies that allow users to share and utilize their geographic
data. Combine blogging tools, geotagged photographs, mobile devices and geolocation
techniques with data format standards that can carry geographic information from
provider to consumer; add aggregate services that mix and match feeds of data
from their source to potential users; and top it off with geographic search and
visualization libraries - that's GeoStack.
