Boingo Wireless Inc., the world’s leading wholesale network aggregator and operator of neutral-host Wi-Fi networks, has announced it has joined the Symbian Platinum Program and is demonstrating its port of Boingo® Embedded Wi-Fi Toolkit to Symbian OS at 3GSM.
Wi-Fi Roaming Leader Joins Symbian Platinum Program
The Boingo® Embedded Wi-Fi Toolkit offers Symbian OS licensees the opportunity to integrate seamless Wi-Fi roaming connectivity into their dual-mode handsets.
The initial port, which will be demonstrated at the Forum Nokia PRO arcade at 3GSM World Congress, supports S60 software on Symbian OS. A subsequent port will support UIQ on Symbian OS later this year. Symbian OS is licensed by the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturers and to date more than 100 million Symbian smartphones have shipped worldwide to more than 250 major network operators.
The Boingo Embedded Wi-Fi Toolkit enables Wi-Fi and dual-mode smartphones to easily and transparently authenticate to Boingo’s Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide. Users will be able to turn on their devices and enjoy a broadband Wi-Fi connection when in range of any Boingo Hot Spot in venues such as hotels, airports, convention centers, truck stops, and retail stores around the world.
“Symbian smartphones are among the sexiest and most robust devices in the world,” said Colby Goff, senior vice president - network strategy and business development for Boingo Wireless. “Adding a Symbian OS port to our portfolio opens up a tremendous new range of platforms that can leverage an embedded Boingo toolkit, which is a significant step for extending our market leadership in Wi-Fi device access.”
Boingo Becomes Symbian Platinum Partner
Boingo also joined the Symbian Platinum Program, an industry forum that brings together leading technology innovators and service providers from across the mobile value chain — all providing compelling applications, middleware and services for Symbian smartphones.
“Symbian is delighted to partner with Boingo Wireless, leading Wi-Fi hotspot aggregator – now with over 60,000 hot spots located around the globe,” said Jerry Panagrossi, vice president, US Operations, Symbian. “The Boingo Embedded Wi-Fi Toolkit enables Symbian OS licensees to integrate Wi-Fi roaming capabilities directly into their Symbian smartphones, offering seamless connectivity with Boingo’s award winning Wi-Fi hot spot service.”
