The Mobile Digital TV Alliance Publishes White Paper Discussing The Economics of Mobile TV Print E-mail
Written by Mobile Digital TV Alliance
Thursday, 25 January 2007

SAN RAMON, Calif.- The Mobile Digital TV Alliance today released a white paper, discussing the economic viability and consumer adoption of mobile TV.

 “The Economics of Mobile TV,” authored by Yoram Solomon, discusses how open standards promote mature competition furthermore improving the economics of mobile broadcast TV, how mobile TV adds a new dimension of value to existing products; as well as why – contrary to popular belief – consumers will pay to use this added service.

Mobile TV is a technological revolution and the next evolution of premium content. This paper delves into the economics of a true competitive environment founded on open standards as promoted by the Mobile DTV Alliance, based on the DVB-H standard. In addition, this paper examines:

The value proposition for cellular operators and others in the mobile ecosystem;
Unicast, Multicast, Broadcast – comparative economics based solely on subscriptions and minutes;
Verification of how open standards facilitate rapid, cost-effective deployments, foster competition and help leverage existing wireless infrastructure;
An evaluation of consumer consumption habits and the relevancy of content/functionality;
Incremental revenue opportunities such as video on demand, mobile marketing and interactive mobile advertising, Web access and other interactive functionalities;
An assessment of expected subscription rates as result of exposure to service, looking at adoption cycle from initial introduction, through commercial trials, to full-subscription.
“The Economics of Mobile TV” is available for download at www.mdtvalliance.org.

About the DVB-H Standard

DVB-H is an open procedure standard developed by the DVB Project and enjoys worldwide industry support with more than 100 companies working on DVB-H components, devices and services today. The open approach of the DVB-H standard nurtures flexibility of business models, competition and sales opportunities for the value chain. The DVB-H standard incorporates IP Standards and OFDM air interface technology with superior spectral efficiency, immunity to multi-path fading and excellent mobile performance. DVB-H is standardized by ETSI as EN 302-304 and by TIA as TIA-1105.
