The Platform Promise: S60 Devices From Samsung - Java technology was heralded as write-once-run-everywhere - we know the reality was somewhat different. As the first Samsung S60 devices arrive in the SymbianOne offices Richard Bloor asks if the S60 platform serves Symbian C++ developers better. In this article Bloor tests the Samsung SGH-G810, SGH-I550, SGH-L870, and SGH-I8510 (INNOV8) S60 devices.

Cicero Networks enable wVoIP and seamless Wi-Fi cellular roaming on the Nokia E60, E61, E70 and N80 Print E-mail
Written by Cicero Networks
Friday, 03 November 2006
Cicero Networks, a leading provider of wVoIP solutions for Fixed Mobile Convergence, has announced availability of CiceroPhone, dual-mode VoIP client for Nokia S60 handsets. Another first to market for Cicero, this dual-mode solution for the Nokia S60 platform uniquely enables seamless roaming between the Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Cicero Networks announces the industry’s first Dual-mode, VCC client for NokiaŽ S60 smartphones.

Furthermore over 8 million Nokia S60 smartphones shipped during Q2 2006 alone, demonstrating that mass market wVoIP can now become a reality. Developed by Nokia, Series 60 is the world’s leading smartphone platform, with more than 70 million S60 devices already in the market.

CiceroPhone provides a unified, highly intuitive user experience, whereby calls are automatically routed over the best available network - Wi-Fi or cellular. Intelligent routing rules ensure cost and quality are optimised on all calls. In addition, CiceroPhone enables routing decisions to be optimised on the handset for certain numbers or ranges of numbers for specific networks.

“Nokia is the market leader in the smartphone market and it has been a strategic priority for us to support S60 platform to enable operators to drive Fixed Mobile convergence adoption,” said Ross Brennan, CEO Cicero Networks. “The addition of CiceroPhone for Nokia S60 smartphones to our portfolio underpins our commitment to bring mobile wVoIP technology and Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) solutions to the mainstream market.”

According to the latest research from technology analyst firm Canalys (www.canalys.com), growth in the converged device market continues at pace. The overall year-on-year market growth of converged devices in Q2 2006 (smart phones and wireless handhelds) was 73%.

Nokia dominates the smartphone market, shipping over 9 million Symbian smart phones during Q2 2006, a year-on-year rise of 35%. Canalys estimates that more than 95% of these were S60 models, which have recently branched out from their consumer-oriented, keypad-centric designs to include enterprise-focused models such as the keyboard-based E61.

Cicero Networks launched the industry’s first dual-mode client for Windows Mobile 5.0 converged devices in 2005 and from there it has established itself as the leading dual-mode client application on the market. It has been already been deployed by a number of Telecommunication service providers and is also being used in pre-market trials in over 30 operators.

CiceroPhone for Symbian OS is scheduled for release on the 30th November 2006.
