Mobile Services Showcased by Nokia and Symbian Developers at the 2003 Forum Nokia Media & Music Market... On November 19, 2003 in Paris, France more than 2 dozen Symbian developers showed off some exciting new mobile service applications to a room full of carrier representatives. SymbianOne Editor, Glenn Letham was also in attendance.
(A SymbianOne.com Feature) On November 19, 2003 a relatively “secretive” event took place in Paris, France. Unless you were a Symbian developer, member of Forum.Nokia, or a representative from a major carrier, you likely wouldn’t have known this event had taken place. Oh yeah… if you were a SymbianOne.com writer, editor, or partner you may have know about the event or even better, you would have been there! That’s right, Glenn Letham [yours truly], Managing Editor of SymbianOne was in attendance and will now share with you what took place – read on!
The event was billed as The Nokia Global Application Summit, a cozy and personal showcase of Media and Multi-Media applications. The invitation-only event was a chance for developers to strut their stuff, so to speak, and introduce attendees to the latest mobile services and digital content. In all there were representatives from 24 companies invited to make presentations, the highlight of which being a 60 second time slot for each company to present the who/what/where/when/and why of their application. These presentations were fantastic and very compelling as each speaker clearly and concisely used his/her time to make a detailed pitch in a very short time. I have to admit that every speaker did a great job with such a short slot. Of course the presentations didn’t end after 60 seconds, however, this set the tone for the rest of the day and enabled those in attendance to define their own agenda and seek out more information from the developer(s) whose application piqued their interest the most.
The presentations showcased content from a number of categories including information services, fun, games, music, mobile marketing, video, imaging, and location-based services. Each presentation, or more specifically, each new application shared a common element; they have all been built on 3GPP (video), Symbian 6.1, or Symbian 7.0s. The applications/data/services have all been targeted at users of MMS-enabled devices and perhaps most important to carrier reps in attendance, each is designed to stimulate usage and offer a compelling environment that will lead to increased ARPU. A number of fun, compelling, and personalized apps were presented and most of us left the venue waiting anxiously for these apps to be made available to us by our local carrier!
Some key numbers from the event:
- 1 – one day full of cool and original ideas
- 23 – developer companies in attendance
- 19 – companies/buyers present
- 34 – operator reps on hand
- 7700 - the Nokia series 90 device launching next year that will offer even more reasons for developers to create compelling apps.
- millions – number of potential users of these apps!
Be sure to read Part 2!
