UIQ Technology today released the first public version of UIQ 3, its latest version
of the software platform for the open Symbian OS.
Ronneby, Sweden, 11 October 2005 - At the same time, UIQ
Technology is pleased to announce that UIQ 3 is today supported by the following
phone platforms: Freescale Semiconductor’s MXC, Intel XScale® technology and the
OMAP™ platform from Texas Instruments.
The UIQ 3 platform is an open software platform, based on Symbian OS, allowing
mobile phone manufacturers to differentiate and create diversified phones, all
using one single codeline. This makes it possible for licensees to create portfolios
of phones from the same platform, minimizing the engineering effort and shortening
the time-to-market. UIQ 3 also meets network operators’ and manufacturers’ requirements
for own brand promoting and enables operators' specific service delivery.
The platforms from Freescale, Intel Corporation and Texas Instruments are designed
to create new smartphones fully in line with the opportunities that the UIQ 3
software platform offers. By showing UIQ 3 running on several high-performing
platforms, UIQ Technology can broaden the support to its customers and continue
to accelerate the availability of UIQ based phones in the market.
“Differentiation is key in today’s highly competitive cellular marketplace,”
said Berardino Baratta, director of strategy for Freescale’s Wireless and Mobile
Systems Group. “Freescale’s MXC cellular platforms with UIQ allow OEMs the freedom
to innovate and reduce time to market with new phone designs.”
“Intel is committed to delivering the features and applications that provide
an exciting entertainment experience or productive business,” said Mark Casey,
director and general manager of Intel’s Applications Processor Business Unit.
“Working with UIQ Technology, we are able to provide phone manufacturers with
the hardware and software solutions they need to deliver differentiated handsets
as cost-effectively as possible.”
“We are very pleased that multiple handset manufacturers have selected TI’s OMAP
platform for their UIQ based phones. We believe that our OMAP 2™ processors combined
with UIQ 3 will deliver stunning levels of multimedia and graphics performance,”
said Richard Kerslake, general manager of OMAP processors, TI’s Wireless Terminals
Business Unit.
