SymbianOne Feature Article

The Platform Promise: S60 Devices From Samsung - Java technology was heralded as write-once-run-everywhere - we know the reality was somewhat different. As the first Samsung S60 devices arrive in the SymbianOne offices Richard Bloor asks if the S60 platform serves Symbian C++ developers better. In this article Bloor tests the Samsung SGH-G810, SGH-I550, SGH-L870, and SGH-I8510 (INNOV8) S60 devices.

DataViz to Bring Mobile ActiveSync Client and Document Editing Solution To Nokia 9300 and Nokia 9500 Print E-mail
Written by DataViz
Tuesday, 27 September 2005
In an interesting move DataViz have announced RoadSync and Documents To Go for Nokia's Series 80 devices. RoadSync makes perfect sense but Documents To Go is a little odd considering these features are already supported on Series 80 devices, we will await this one with interest.

New RoadSync and Documents To Go for Symbian OS-based Series 80 devices to be Showcased at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2005

DataViz, Inc., leading provider of Office compatibility solutions for over 21 years, has announced its mobile ActiveSync client, RoadSync, and mobile Office suite, Documents To Go, will support the Nokia 9300 smartphone and Nokia 9500 Communicator running Symbian OS-based Series 80. With the addition of this newly supported platform, DataViz' mobile Office portfolio will include support for three of the most popular smartphone platforms: Symbian OS-based UIQ, Series 80 and Palm OS. Demonstrations of these and other DataViz solutions will be available at the DataViz Booth #1405 located in the Enterprise Mobility Pavilion at CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2005, September 27-29 in San Francisco, California.

"We are pleased to see DataViz bring their mobility solutions to market for our Nokia 9300 smartphone and 9500 Communicator through the support of Forum Nokia Pro Enterprise Zone. We believe our devices' large color screens, integrated QWERTY keyboards and high-capacity memory, combined with business-critical applications like DataViz' mobile Office suite and mobile ActiveSync client, address many of the productivity needs of our enterprise customers." said Lee Epting, vice president, Forum Nokia.

Based on the Exchange ActiveSync protocol licensed from Microsoft, RoadSync provides secure, wireless and direct synchronization with Exchange Server 2003, thereby extending the existing mobile benefits of Exchange Server 2003 to non-Microsoft devices. RoadSync for Series 80-enabled devices will offer full mobile access to corporate Outlook e-mail, attachments, calendar and contacts, while eliminating the need for middleware servers, service fees, or subscriptions commonly associated with wireless e-mail. Additionally, features like "direct push" and "remote wipe" will be added into RoadSync, following the release of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 later this year, to enable more businesses to deploy a wireless e-mail solution for their workforce at a fraction of the cost associated with today's alternatives.

"Today more businesses are recognizing both the end-user productivity gains and cost-savings benefits that wireless e-mail can provide," said Øyvind Lundbakk Pedersen, Director of Business Development for SmartPhones Telecom AS in Norway. "We strongly believe in this mobile ActiveSync client RoadSync from DataViz because it will give our customers the flexibility to deploy Series 80 devices faster into the enterprise space."

"I've been previewing RoadSync for Series 80 and am very impressed with its ease of installation and quick set-up," said Rob Gordon, CEO of Dezine Limited. "This is just what small business owners like myself need: an affordable, straight-forward solution that enables employees to get their Outlook e-mail, contacts and calendar on a variety of devices including the Nokia 9300 smartphone and Nokia 9500 Communicator."

Documents To Go for Series 80 will provide owners of Nokia 9300 smartphone and Nokia 9500 Communicator with the ability to open, view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel files. DataViz' unique InTact Technology will be included, ensuring complete original document integrity is maintained when Microsoft Office files are edited by users on the smartphone. This is especially vital when desktop documents containing complex formatting and layouts are edited in a mobile environment. By making sure that formatting associated with these files are always kept to their original form, users can confidently edit files on their smartphone without fear of negatively altering their files in the process. Any edits made in Documents To Go will be intelligently merged with a file's original formatting to create an updated document that can than be e-mailed or exchanged with others directly from the smartphone.

"We are very pleased that DataViz has expanded their product offerings to the Series 80 platform," said Salvador Casales, Sales Manager, INCODE. "Documents To Go and RoadSync will present many new opportunities for INCODE and resellers in Mexico by providing enterprise customers with cost-effective, easy-to-implement solutions for mobile access to their important Outlook e-mail, client proposals, budget reports and other business data".

"We are excited to be a part of the Nokia ecosystem and to provide owners of the Nokia 9300 smartphone and Nokia 9500 Communicator access to our mobile office solutions," said Bonnie Boyle, Senior Business Manager, DataViz. "As more businesses expand their IT strategy to include mobility, we are committed to providing enterprise-quality, cost-effective solutions that give mobile professionals reliable access to mission-critical files, e-mail and other corporate data using smartphones."

Availability

RoadSync for Series 80 will be available directly from DataViz (www.dataviz.com) beginning immediately and soon from international partners such as Swedish distributor Datanät, UK dealer EMCC, ELMO ICT Systems in the Netherlands, distributor INCODE in Mexico and SF Solution Factory in Switzerland.

Documents To Go for Series 80 will be available in late October. Availability details will be announced at the time of the product's launch.
