True Type Fonts On Your Sony Ericsson Print E-mail
Written by Richard Bloor
Tuesday, 18 January 2005
MDM's Quickoffice can display a document's text in the correct font if the appropriate true type fonts are loaded onto a Sony Ericsson P800, P900 or P910. Loading true type fonts is relatively straightforward and can be easily tackled by any user.

The fonts preloaded on a Sony Ericsson P800, P900 or P910 are designed to provide the best experience when read from the phones screen. If they are used at high pitches, particularly those used in presentations, they display poorly. Setting your phone up to use true type fonts overcomes this limitation.

Setting up true type fonts involves tow simple steps, installing the freetype.dll and loading the desired fonts onto the phone.

If Opera is loaded on your device then the freetype.dll will already be installed. Loading Opera is worthwhile anyway so do it if you have not done so. Opera for UIQ is available from Opera (www.opera.com) or from Sony Ericsson's phone support (www.sonyericsson.com). If for some reason it is not desirable to have Opera on your device then the freetype.dll is available in one of the developer packages from Symbian's Web site. The download URL is http://www.symbian.com/developer/downloads/files/FreeType.zip. In the zip package is FreeType.sis. The FreeType.sis is installed in the same was as any sis file, either from a PC via PC Suite or by transferring it to a device.

The next step is to copy the font file to drive:/system/fonts on the phone. If a memory card reader is available it is easiest to copy the files to D:/system/fonts, as PC connect does not save true type font files correctly when dragged to the device. If a card reader is not available then a third party file manager, such as SymbianWare's FileMan or Epocware's Handy Explorer can be used to copy the true type files from the documents folder, in which PC Connect places them in, to system/fonts on the phone or card memory.

Once this has been done the final step is to restart the phone and the new fonts will be available.
