More on Preminet... we recently presented an intro to Preminet, Nokia's operator
brandable, open architecture, hosted solution. This piece gives a bit more insight
as to what Preminet means to the application developer and we give you a first-hand
look at the UI and how simple it really is to use.
Officially announced just prior to NMC 2004 in November 2004, Preminet is an
open architecture providing a platform to serve any mobile device that can support
OMA download standards and be served via any storefront that can support an XML
feed. This operator brandable, hosted solution streamlines how developers can
get their works to the operators for distribution. For the operator, it provides
a simple to manage solution enabling their customers/consumers to easily search,
locate, demo, download, and purchase applications.
Helping the Developer Get to Market
Forum.Nokia (forum.nokia.com) has helped thousands of developers produce many
successful applications - essentially, FN connects its members to tools. Preminet
takes this to the next level, creating a World of opportunities, regardless of
how small or large the developer is perceived to be. An alternative means to access
content, Preminet will be the enabler for the small developer and provide them
with access to market.
For the Developer
Upload - The developer submits all the necessary files for all supported devices
*
Market - includes sales and marketing information such as demos, screen shots,
documents
Target - select which operators will have access to your application. For example,
some applications may be localized in content and suitable to only specific market
segments.
Try - select which operators will have access to a predetermined number of trials
Set Price - select a price plan such as cost per download or cost per period.
* Note: all applications submitted to Preminet must be either Symbian Signed
or Java Verified. This will ensure the integrity of applications available.
For the Operator
Preminet is the enabler to help carriers source rich, quality content. Applications
can be easily integrated into existing customized offerings and a searchable master
catalog enables quick and simple access to additional content. Pricing (split)
between operator and developer can be negotiated and the Preminet client enables
offer/counter-offers in order to streamline the process.
As an added value to developers, we were reminded recently in a talk with Nokia's
Steen Thygesen (Director, Platform Solutions) that not only are the terms and
breakdown (split) totally negotiable, but Preminet provides for all the invoicing
and payment backbone. When we asked Thygesen how Preminet differs from BREW he
is quick to point out the following strengths:
- Preminet's Open architecture (no proprietary solution)
- The product upload procedure is very simple
- Preminet uses OMA download standards
- Preminet is suitable for applications for both GSM and CDMA devices.

Preminet provides a flexible business model
Preminet appears to be a win-win solution for all parties. As far as a tool that
facilitates and enhances corporate branding its a slam dunk. Add to that the support
for industry standards, the adherence and requirement for application certification,
and the open access that the developer has to carriers around the Globe and you
can be assured that we'll be hearing more about Preminet real soon. There are
no guarantees of any application's success, however, the doors are open and the
opportunity exists for those that elect to take advantage of a good opportunity.
Nokia's slogan may be "Connecting People", however, this solution is Connecting
Developers & Carriers!
